She is very strict on participation. Make sure you have something to say before coming to class. But I think that is a good thing. Her class is delightful and we learn a lot.

Dr. Kaplan is hard to read, but a lot of fun once you get to know her. Clearly, she knows what she is doing in the classroom and knows what she wants from her students. Yet, she is open to suggestions and constructive criticism. She places emphasis on participation, so be ready and willing to read and discuss the texts.

Comment:
Dr. Kaplan is a little too tough when it comes to grading students based on their participation. If you work hard and make an effort in understanding the lesson she has given, she will not give up on you. If she sees you struggling but knows your a good student she will accommodate you by putting you into smaller groups so that you can speak more.

I really enjoyed her class. She's a tough but fair grader . It's graduate school so you certainly do have to work for a grade and you don't get an A just by asking but don't be afraid! There is no rude talk in her class. However, you have to do some reading and brush up on the historical context of the works. I would recommend this professor.

I took her for Graduate class and like the undergraduate ones, she grades participation and essays very harshly. You have to show up for class and talk rudely over most students to get your participation points. She's very picky on essays, her feedback on them is not helpful and nothing you do on your essays will ever be good enough for her.

Kaplan is an interesting, fair prof. Her tests/assignments aren't hard but it's important to do them come to class. You MUST be comfortable speaking to take this class, but otherwise you will learn fast. 2 complaints: she grades participation rather harshly, and there are native French speakers in my class that made it hard to keep up. Speak up!

In Grammar, participation = 20% of your grade, average for was a D, the only people with high part. points took up time with useless questions. She wouldn't bump my 79.3 up to a B, despite the fact that I emailed her frequently with questions en francais. Homework = big part of your grade and is randomly taken 2-3 times but you have it every day.

Man! Dr. Kaplan is one hard prof. After 3 years high school, then 2 years in College ( where I made all A's) she put the hurt on me bad! I had to struggle and study around the clock just to make a C. Have a very strong grasp on French before attempting her 3000 level classes. Also, her tests are very expansive and cover a lot of material.

You should really come to class and do the homework to get a decent grade. The class was a lot of fun, and you do a lot of presentations. The teacher is pretty nice though.

considering that neither english NOR french is her first language, it's mind blowing how great of a prof Kaplan is. She's incredibly helpful with her students, teaches super interesting topics (and knows em well!), and does grade very fairly.

Dr. Kaplan is a challenging, caring professor who is very fair with her grades. She demands a lot of her students, but is very willing to work with sutdents and listen to their needs. She is *very* well versed in her specialty (17/18th cent. French lit)
