She was very quiet/monotonous and I didn't find the class interesting at all. On the plus side, she is very understanding and willing to give chances.

De anza College must keep her like a jewel and never let her leave. Thousand times better than Foothill Microbio confusing teachers. At least her class makes sense and its not a waste of time and money.

What can i say? shes the best BIO teacher ever. You don't even need the text book. I bought it and didn't open it ONCE. EVERYTHING comes from the slides, she puts them online too so you can just print them out if you want. Study Guides, She answers EVERYTHING. in lab just ask her if your answers are right, she tells you. No HW. TOTALLY RECOMMENDED

Prof. O'Brien is great, very easy going & knows her stuff. The class is not easy lots of material on every exam and studying and attending lab is a must if you plan to do well. The book is not necessary because all her test is based out of her power points. But book is helpful for review/studying illustrations. I highly recommend her for Micro.

One of the top teachers at De Anza. It's a no-brainer to take Melanie. It's a fun class that she makes interesting. It's critical to print out the PowerPoint slides from her website. You will need to study hard for the Lecture & Lab exams, but you can do it if you apply yourself. I got an A. No extra credit. Doesn't mind if you show up late.

She seems to have a heart of gold when it comes to educating people. She's not there to frustrate you, but spends tons of time making sure you understand the subjects. She has enough of the real-world savvy to spare students from memorizing stuff of a very short half-life. One down-side is that her grade is somewhat inflated. A "feel-good" class.

The comments on this page are no lie. She is awesome. I love Micro and I thought I was going to hate it. It's interesting working with real bacteria and preparing microscope slides, inoculating test tubes and growing bacteria. I'm getting an A in the class so far and I feel confident I will get an A in the class. Horray for Melanie Obrien

Great teacher. I'm taking her now. She can take a difficult concept and put it into simple & easy to understand terms. She had the best explanation of the Kreb's cycle and electronic transport chain. I think I'm finally starting to understand how that works.

Best MicroBio teacher you could possibly have. Test/Quizes were based heavily off of notes and handouts she provides. No surprises. Must attend Labs, but lec are not as important because she just formal reviews the notes she has available on her webpage. I would recommend her to anyone. Haven't recieved my grade, but I believe I did very well.
