I took CHEM264 with Chong and failed with a 49. Second time with him got me an 88. He might seem intimidating but is actually very friendly and helpful. Very knowledgeable. He can answer anything you throw at him in an instant. Did my CHEM494 with him as well cause I like him that much. Great supervisor. Overall, a really great prof!

General idea of Chong pre 264 was a terrible Professor but post 264 I think he is a gem. Definitely one of my favourite Professors, vast wealth of knowledge and willing to share this knowledge with the interested students. Sometimes the only thing I could do was marvel at his mastery of organic. If you must do Organic take with Professor Chong.

He is one of the most amazing profs I have encountered in chemistry. Not for being overly friendly and giving easy midterms, but inspiring and full of knowledge to share about "life". After taking CHEM 267, I got really into orgo. You will likely not do well just by sitting in class, all the course takes is tons of practice. It's all fun and games!

he doesn't seem to be interested in answering questions. he does not even discuss some of the content needed to answer quiz questions. If my schedule allowed it I would switch in a heartbeat. stay away from him. I got 88 in orgo 1 btw. I'm not lazy or blaming the prof for no reason. It seems unfair that he doesn't cover all needed content.

If anyone finds Orgo easy & needs a challenge - Chong is your guy. Way to make a hard subject ever harder than it already is! Terrible writing & barely comprehensible speech. Partway through the term, attendance kept getting smaller until I decided to try out the other prof & I found out why - 2/3 of our class was there! 1/3 of Chong's class failed

Good Guy. Biology is definitely not all memorization. But if u compare biology to chemistry, biology will seem essentially like pure memorization

Never skip this class and do all the assignments. His tests are from his notes and his assignments, so do them at least twice as study materials. And go see him every time u don't get sth. He's intimidating but trust me, u will rip the course. I barely passed orgo 1 and 2 but I ripped this course with a high 90s.

Chong was definitely the best organic prof i had so far. He is very approachable and is very patient. His courses are not for people who just memorizes everything. He wants you to learn and understand things logically. If you are willing to learn organic chem you will do well. He tests are not based on memorization but rather on understanding.

It's funny to see all those people taking CHEM 266 (the most basic organic course) commenting about how they don't understand organic and it's Chong's fault. Organic chemistry is not biology, it's about thinking, not memorization, and Mike Chong is the best prof in the Chemistry Department if you want to learn how to think in organic chemistry.

His course is not easy but the content is EXTREMELY USEFUL if you have a chemistry career. He is very patient and approachable if you are a grad student in his lab. His personal character is probably the best in organic chemistry.

Had him 13 years ago. He doesn't really teach the methodology - he just sends you on library assignments and expects you to memorize synthetic reactions from literally hundreds of papers. Throughout my university career I scored over 80% in almost all of my chem courses. In this one I scored 47% but he passed me with a 60%.

Obviously a research prof who doesn't care for the teaching assignments the department offers him. In great contrast to 267's lecturer, Forsey, Chong was hard to follow and offered only one piece of help outside of class: "it's all in the lecture notes". Sadly, the department gave us either him or Fang in the fall, but avoid both if possible!

Comment:
266 is a tough course. It takes interest and willingness to review regularly. From day 1 Chong set the stage for the course by saying it is meant to be learned through the finger tips - through practice, not passively. His examples are relevant and his attitude about the subject is great. He makes concepts seem easier and takes the edge off of orgo
