If it weren't for this class, I wouldn't bother paying attention to politics. Very interesting class with rich content. My advice is to take good notes and to keep up on the readings. Simple class, just show up and pay attention.

I loved this class. He starts every class with current events. Take good notes. you don't have to be amazing at writing essays but there are a lot of small essays (plus the 8-page paper). There is a lot of reading. He also gives you extra credit opportunities each week. You don't have to buy a textbook.

he is a strict professor but will give weekly opportunities for extra credit. can earn up to 10 points of extra credit by watching the political movies he assigns. not too much hw, but reading is a big portion. mostly online articles and free online textbook. he is short tempered

Lots of small easy assignments, only one big assignment. A 8 page research paper, over a month to do it. Midterm and Final are in class essays, very easy if you pay attention in class and take good notes.

Outstanding Professor. I took this class over the summer and I enjoyed it. Professor Monte emphasizes the importance of politics, and the value of staying up to date on politics. You will learn a lot if you study and take good notes. Also I admired how he was able to find hilarious political humor videos related to lectures. Take his class!

Not meant for slackers! Very old school type of guy. Taught at UC Davis so he structures his class exactly like a UC course. pretty difficult class to pass if you dont take solid notes of every lecture every single day. If you dont study for the quizzes and you will not pass. Bottomline: You have to actually try in his class to get a good grade.

This class was so good I almost changed my major. No, it wasn't the easiest class there is actual work to do. If you show up, listen, take notes, read and think you should be just fine. At first I thought his lecture style was messy & hard to follow. Truth is its an amazing master piece weaving current events with the class topics.

Not even a decent prof, here's why: Teaches from a biased viewpoint, is extremely subjective, very tough grader, completely unapproachable, boring lectures, thinks he is funnier than he really is, uses bad biased sources for all news, if you think differently don't express your opinion he won't like you, wish I would have read reviews before...

Freidig's a funny guy, but I wouldn't take his class again. He doesn't write notes on the board or use powerpoint, and exams are based solely on what he said during lectures- so if you don't write something he said once at normal speed during you're screwed, especially bc exams make of 100 of the total 200 points for the semester.

Freidig was a great professor and made class very interesting. He is clearly very knowledgeable but doesn't use power points. He always plays videos (like Even Stevphen) for the class that relate to the topic which I liked. I took this class over the summer and it was very manageable. 2 chapters every week and a quiz almost every week. Essay tests

I took Freidig's class last semester and it was, honestly, not a great experience. He did have a good sense of humor and his class can be interesting - but it didn't feel like he wanted anyone to succeed. His expectations were pretty ridiculous and he gave me a grade of C for participation even though I showed up every day. Glad the class is over.

You only get the oppertunity for 200 points in the class. The midterm and final are both essays and are 50 points each. The TEN PAGE research paper is 50, and quizzes and attendance are 50. Everthying is based on lectures, THAT SUCK. He literally spends an hour of class on news and 30 mins on the material, which he doesnt explain thoroughly enough

Monte is a funny professor. If you do not like Politics do not take his class. Long lectures and has many quizzes. Research paper is required to plass class. It is long (10 pages). WILL drop you after missing three classes. Doesn't really help out students. Expects for you to read news and know what is happening.

Monte is a great teacher to have for POLS1, he usually started class with daily news and found a way to link what was going on currently to what happened in the past. The textbook he requires you to read is free online. Tough but reasonable grader on the midterms. does not use powerpoint so be prepared to take lots of notes on his lectures

Nice guy. Be there EVERYDAY. Lectures are long, all over,& never new what part was actually important(he didn't really write out notes just talked). Took this class at 7:30 am,if you don't like politics, don't do it. Exams are all green book essays nothing else. Does have extra credit but it requires going to theatre, gets pricey. BIG research paper.

I loved Pols 1 with Freidig. He is such a gem and is so spunky. The class is based on lecture but he provides a FREE online book. He has very little written on the board so make sure to take extra notes as he is explaining things because his exams are all lecture based. As a poly sci major, I would definitely recommend others to take this class.

I learned so much about our politics and history in this class! He is up front on how to get a good grade. Give extra credit but be ready to participate and read you chapters if you want to get an A. Clear homework assignments, quizzes and a term paper due. He made the subject interesting and funny. I would take him again. Online textbook. No cost
