LOVED HER!! She made the class very interesting. I recommend taking a laptop for notes. I chose to write them, but 5 pages of notes back and front daily. Test and quizzes were easy and not trickery to them. She gave study guides and even records her lectures and post on canvas. Will try and get her again if I can.Quizzes were on ch. not notes.READ!

Comment:

Fairly easy class. Very interesting; especially if you don't know anything about Africa. Gives study guides for tests and final. Quizzes are readings from a chapter in the textbook. Only need one book and whatever novel she assigns for your paper. Tests are usually, in my opinion, easier than the quizzes. Attendance is mandatory.

Comment:

Essah is a great teacher. Only book you need for this class is History of Africa. She provides study guides for tests. Her test are reasonable but do require studying. She will help you with anything during office hours. I will say the quizes are hit or miss. I never made higher than 7/10. The paper is 10 pgs but isn't bad. Overall she is great!

She is very disdainful of whites. It rubs the wrong way. Calls LOTS of people idiots..pot & kettle. Anyway, she's average on tests; the quizzes are random even if you read right before class, very much a shot in the dark. The take-home you HAVE to cite everything, she gave C's to those of us who didn't. Really doesn't like white people...

Dr. Essah can come off as cold and uncaring, but if you show up for office hours and let her know you're committed and interested then she reveals a totally different side. She can be vague at times, but I think it's just because she expects students to already know how to succeed in college before they enter her class.

This is my 3rd time taking Essah and I like her a lot. You do have to take a lot of notes, but the study guides she gives before the test are really helpful. She also gives all the essay questions in the study guide.. so that is automatically 30 points. Great Teacher and knows her stuff,go to her office and get to know her and she will really help.

Be prepared to take lots of notes. She will give you a study guide a week before each exam. If you go to class, take good notes, and go over the study guide, then you will be able to pass the class with at least a B. She's tough, but she will help you if you have any questions. The class was boring, but the material fairly interesting.

Everything is lecture and notes, if you learn easy that way good for you but if you need more than that then she isn't for you. Everything comes off of the notes you take and study guides and put together well, the only thing is there isn't much personality in her class.

I find her class easy. I have a high B in it. Her notes correspond with the test. I recommend reading the textbook, doing the study guide questions provided on the website link for the textbook, and looking over the lecture notes. If you do that, you'll do fine. She really isn't that hard like the others mentioned.

Ive had her 3 times and every time I take about 30 pages of notes per test study her study guide (as in looking up every term on it) and usually only half of the stuff on the study guide is on the test (usually the non important stuff). Shes just very unclear in her method of teaching. All classes are overhead notes. And her tests are usually tuff.

Worst teacher I've had in life. Avoid at all costs even if it means not taking the course. No passion behind her dry, dull lectures. No willingness to help. Sarcastic comments to questions in class and during office hours. It's as if she wants you to struggle and fail. Not worth your time or energy

Hard to understand, but doesn't speak very quickly, so it's easy to stay caught. DO NOT miss her class if you plan to pass. Very informative, lectures with an overhead. Tests are tricky, must be very detailed.

The class is not that bad, but you have to take good notes and study. You also have to get used to her voice because it may be hard to understand what she's saying at first. She did not put the notes on an overhead or anything so u have to listen and write down what she says.
