Prof. Vernon is a wonderful teacher. He is kind and understanding of students' needs when it comes to learning a foreign language. He created an environment in which all students got along with each other and the class was a safe space to learn. Never put any students down for making mistakes and is a clear and fair grader. I highly recommend him!

I love Prof Vernon! He's really passionate about helping students learn Portuguese and will do anything to help you succeed. He is really funny and makes class enjoyable and engaging. He's one of my favorite profs I've had at UNC and I would recommend him to anyone thinking about studying the subject.

So everyone here is saying he is super easy, and I definitely agree with that; however, I received a B+ for reasons that were largely my own fault. I would take him again without hesitation. Fantastic professor and very enthusiastic in class.

One of my favorite professors at UNC. I'm terrible at language classes but this ended up being my favorite class of the semester. Easy grader, and he is amazing at interacting with the class and keeping the lecture interesting. Would absolutely take again.

Dr. Vernon is hilarious and a great teacher. He really does care about his students. He made the class easy and enjoyable. He is a very generous grader and it is not hard to make an A. I highly recommend taking a class with Dr. Vernon. His class was a low stress class.

One of the nicest and most enthusiastic instructors I've ever had. He is the dept head. He can be a little unclear, but he is great at answering questions. Course isn't that demanding, however he tends to put words and phrases on assessments that haven't been taught. You can ask him about them during tests but it still makes things more difficult.

Comment:

Professor Vernon is great!! I really like this class and it isn't super difficult. The assignments are pretty easy and not time-consuming. You need to do a little review outside of class to do well on exams, but definitely the least preparation of any language class I've taken. Take Richard - he is hilarious!!

Prof. Vernon cultivates a relaxed and fun learning environment. The books we were assigned were (mostly) interesting and he really values your input. There are reading quizzes at the beginning of every class but they don't count for much overall. Very approachable and knowledgable guy.

You don't have to work that hard to get a good grade in this class. The homework is graded by completion and the tests are straightforward. He's a fun professor! He keeps the class light-hearted by cracking jokes and sharing anecdotes. He's also very knowledgeable about Portuguese and he makes it a stress-free learning environment.

After taking several semesters of Spanish, this was a wonderful shift! Vernon is incredibly laid back and cares about whether his students are actually learning the language and its practical usage. I have never had a better language professor than him. Structure of class/assignments is conducive to maximum learning.

Do yourself a favor and take Richard Vernon. He gives out like 10 small, incredibly easy assignments so nothing weighs too heavily on your grade. He is the funniest teacher I have ever met, and hes so laid back and care free. He probably wont learn your name in a class of 20, but who cares? He doesnt even really take attendance.

Some say his class is "easy", but its not that he doesn't make us do work, its that he makes it straight forward and avoids unnecessary bs. Often cracks jokes so the class envirn is very relaxed. He also is EXTREMELY knowledable about the portuguese language and histoty, but also very pasionate about it and includes numerous anecdotes in lectures.

Vernon is a genuine, funny, and approachable professor. Makes learning Portuguese interesting by telling funny jokes or teaching you Brazilian street slang. Very laid back and always fun to joke around with. Tests are easy and he prepares you well on what to study. One of my favorite professors at UNC.

Awesome Professor. I hate taking language classes but I loved his class mostly just because of him. Every day he will make you laugh and is never in a bad mood. Loves to work with his class and is definitely my favorite professor at UNC. Would highly recommend but be prepared to study a fair amount for tests.

Very great 101 professor. He always answered questions. Very laid back. I am grateful for having him as a 101 because I feel as if i learned a lot more from him than from other teachers I heard about. His tests were easy and online assignments weren't checked until the tests. Always looked forward to his class!

Comment:

Very cool, laid back character. Class tends to be a bit unstructured, but he prepares you well enough for tests. Vernon is a very approachable guy; he'll answer whatever questions you have to the best of his ability. One fault: it takes him a while to return tests and compositions. But he's a fun lecturer so it's a wash.
