Sweet man; couldn't teach his way out of a cardboard box. If you're looking to be encouraged and endlessly analyzed regardless of the quality of your work, he's your man. Otherwise, better off with someone more interested in the words on the page.

Comment:

Scott is one of my favorite professors at NYU. He is so sweet and thoughtful, and if you are respectful of him and his class he will make sure you do well. I highly recommend his The Art and Craft of Poetry class!

Can be a little pedantic at times, but is very supportive, knows what he is talking about, and writes wonderful poetry himself. Easy class, but remember you'll only get that A or A- if you turn up to class and put in the effort required.

Picks favorites, but he's decent. Exposes us to a lot of awesome poets, but sends too many pointless e-mails and jokes. He doesn't comment on a lot on poems and leaves a lot to classmates.

I love him, he cares about the poems his students write and won't ever place value judgements, he respects every poet's integrity. He also knows how to create a comfortable environment to take risks. Take him if you have the chance, I have another poetry workshop prof now, and I really see how much he helped me grow as a poet.
