Crystal clear conducting when everyone has learned thier parts. I have never been infront of a perfect conductor, but this is close for the level of musicianship of the students he is working with. I love working with Dr. Jones!!

Comment:

I've played under lots of different conductors in my education. Jones isn't the best, but he's far from the worst. From reading these other reviews, you'd think he's tone deaf! He's not a very inspiring conductor, but he has a professional attitude, is easy to work with, and picks better music than several of my former conductors.

Comment:

Dr. Jones should not hold a position as a university conductor. The very fact that he is still employed at UI shows how much the music department does not care for the training of young musicians. No matter how nice a guy he (seems) to be, no amount of charisma can make up for incompetence.

Overall I haven't been impressed with Jones conducting skills and the orchestra experience that I have had at the UI. I think my high school conductor was more competant. Jones accepts mediocre performance from very qualified performers, unnacceptable.

Comment:

Serious tempi memory problems, does not understand how to conduct opera at all. Nice man but incompetent. He came in and was given a full tenured Professorship with no previous University experience. What does that say about UIowa? This is a toxic place to be and highly political with little concern about really good teaching.

Very charismatic... but fakey. He doesn't seem to care to fix rehearsal mistakes, just to re-rehearse them. He seems determined to make orchestra an unpleasant experience for all involved. Too bad, I miss having learning and having fun.

Dr. Jones is very qualified to conduct, however, during rehearsals it is not apparent. Having UISO for three days a week, we should sound a lot better. Rehearsal technique is obsurd. Dr. Jones does not fix mistakes that constantly occur.

It is clear that someone part of his inner circle posted the last evaluation since, it is written in such a contrived way. He is a nice guy, but his conducting and rehearsal technique are pretty lousy.
