I took Yoshi's Structures of Japanese class, and it's one of the most useful classes I've taken as a Linguistics major. His notes are clearly defined and easy to understand. If you take Japanese and are serious about studying it, I definitely recommend this class.

Comment:
tl:dr Yoshi is great, the class is awful. Yoshi definitely cares about his students and their success, but the note packet is badly structured and makes the course much more difficult. The course also focuses on outdated, incomplete theories and the application of Syntax and modern theories are not covered. No grades until the end.

Comment:
I took Yoshi for a structures class. Topic: Japanese, his L1, and half the class was grad students. 10% of our grade was learning hiragana, which was useless to the course, but no exams otherwise, and all group project based. If you need a credit for L490, take this. Notes were fill-in, a workbook he made. No readings. Very kind man. Good lecturer.

I had a hard time understanding him and he had very confusing lectures. He did not post one single grade online all semester, so going into the final I had no idea what I had. This courseprofessor frustrated me on a daily basis. It is unclear how many points this course is worth and you will never figure it out because he does not explain.

Little to no class readings and fill-in-the-blank notes made class super easy. Dr. Kitagawa always explained the material very well and was helpful when questions came up. He's also pretty funny and as long as you regularly attend class one or two absences wouldn't hurt you.

Great class. Easy if you attend & pay attention. No textbook; provides some rdgs but you can make it without them. Provides fill-in-the-blank notes for every lecture. Very helpful. Approachable & fun prof, knows his stuff.
