Hinshaw is without a doubt the worst teacher I have ever had. First of all, she's doesn't teach anything, all she does is give and grade quizzes. If you ever ask her a question she will make you feel stupid even if it is something you shouldn't know. I had good TAs that made the class bearable. They taught me everything that I didn't learn myself. It's an embarrassment to byu that she is a professor here.

While taking the class you hate her. However once everything is said and done you will look back and love that old lady that wears her pants up too high. People hate her because she requires you to actually learn and understand! It makes you struggle which is uncomfortable but so worth it in the end!

Two thumbs down! This is a competitive class not in the interest of organic chemistry but most likely university politics. It is very apparent that the professor does not prepare much for the benefit of the students. If taking this class prepare to learn 100% on your own. Be responsible for the ENTIRE textbook.

Wow! She's a great teacher, but has a demeanor a bit different from the traditional lovey dovey BYU professor. Deep down, she is interested in her students, and is open to any question any time (who else leaves their door unlocked all day?). Get past the loud voice and ask questions..you'll be fine (and get in with your TA's).

This class is simple. Everyone gets A's and B's if you show up. The difference between the two is whether you actually learn spectroscopy or not. Use you TA's and use common sense. You're not 3 year-olds anymore just come prepared.

How can you not love Mrs. Hinshaw? She is a little feisty and will let you know when she doesn't like what you are doing but she is a big teddy bear underneath. Fun class, hard but good.

Prof Hinshaw is definately the worst part of the class. She can be nice if you do well in the class or suck up to her. Other then that, just stay away from her. Make sure to get to know your TA's and make friends with everyone around you. I thought the lab was fun because we made it fun!

Unless you score a 90 or higher on the final you will not get any type of A regardless of how you perform the rest of the semester (80% of the class gets a straight up B, so it's best to just accept that up front and spend your time studying more for classes in which you can up your grade). I'd say take a different prof but you don't have a choice!

miss hinshaw is an angry old bitty. don't take offense when she yells at you, its not your fault, its hers...messy divorce years ago or something. Find a good TA and they will teach you what you need to know to do well.

Miss Hinshaw is a very unique person. She'll scare the crap out of you for the first half of the semester. Just realize that she always sounds like she'd yelling when she talks, and you'll be ok. While she's very unapproachable and snappy in class, she's actually quite willing to help if you go in to talk to her. The quizzes are very difficult!

It's 100% true that a good TA makes this class easier. I averaged 20 hrs/week for this class and I was in the "B" range for the first 1/2 of the sem. Then I found a good TA, worked for 2 hrs/wk with them, 3 hrs/wk on my own and pulled off an A-. Hinshaw should not be teaching. She is a grader, not a teacher. In this class, you are your own teacher.

Prof. Hinshaw is ruthless as others will tell you but this class is so easy. To get a B in this class you need to try just a little. If you learn spectra well and stay up to date you'll get an A. Stick close to the TA's and don't just follow along in the workbook. Attempt to understand the why of everything.

Mrs. Hinshaw is willing to help only those students who are at the top of the class. The rest of you can rest assured that she will offer no help whatsoever and will take every opportunity to belittle you and make you realize that you do not know anything, which you already knew because that is why you asked her a question in the first place.

Amazing professor. Yes, she's honest. She's also an amazingly capable teacher who really cares that you understand O-chem. My MCAT score went up 4 points because she taught me to critically think about o-chem and the things that go on around me. Take her class, work hard and you'll be rewarded accordingly.

This is the most ridiculously hard class in the O-Chem series. This lady is bitter and won't do anything but yell in the lab. Her quizzes are totally impossible to study for. I would put 4 hours in studying for them and I still only got 13/15 for my high grade. I got an A in the class, but this is only because I worked my butt off.

Pro. Hinshaw is honest with all students and writes letters accordingly. The previously mentioned letter was from a student who didn't realize that he had been caught cheating and still asked for a letter. If you are good student, she is the teacher for you. She cares and is an excellent teacher.
