Not a very heavy workload, so perfect for an online course for extra credit. Was very clear for all assignment expectations, gave good feedback on the essays.

A great prof! I dont feel judged at all when I throw out any of my ideas, very intellegent, open and friendly! Hard-ish marker, but you learn so much and have so much fun, it's motivates you to work hard and try to achieve that A. I really recommend this prof to anyone :)

Before this course, I didn't really know about how much I'd like Canadian cinema - heck, I'd only seen one Egoyan film called The Adjuster, which kind of freaked me out. But Dr. McIlory's class was really fun and exciting on many levels. A blend of movies, business, sociology, history, politics, and something called auteurism. The last is complex.

Brian taught Research Methods with a great amount of concern for each and every student, as well as a willingness to share his experiences with conducting research, teaching, and communicating ideas to a body of people (either through a presentation or a formal lecture). This is a must for anyone planning to pursue a career in higher education.

Knows a lot about film, but has a tendency to talk down to students because of it, which I found objectionable. All marking was done by TAs, and lectures didn't have much substance to them. I came out of the class knowing about as much as I did when I went in.

Good class. Marks are from your presentation/essay, participation and final essay. If you work hard, you'll get an A. If not, you'll get a B+. Just say something every class and you'll get your participation marks. McIlroy's a fun prof. He lets the class discuss and debate instead of lecturing as Mark Harris would. Makes for an interesting course.

This course was very well structured and highly interesting. Although most of the contact was with the TA's who marked the assignments, the notes provided by the Prof were very helpful and interesting and he was always available through email.

In one film course, Brian McIlroy was able to convince me to change faculties and become a film student. Interesting lectures, dry wit, and excellent methods of examining make him one of the best profs I've ever had at UBC.
