Incredible professor. Without a doubt the best professor I have ever had. A true intellectual who knows how to make the material provocative and engaging. If you somehow managed to fail his class, it was probably your own doing. Get over it. Granted I was tempted to blackmail him at times but he was nonetheless truly worth the outrageous tuition

No, No, No. You know how most law professors like for you to present both sides? You know how some law professors like for you present one side? Barnes fits in NEITHER category. You have to argue the Barnesian side. He is a hot shot in his field and I respect that, but that doesn't mean he has the ability to teach the law. Not a good professo

Run as fast as you can, drop, ask for a deferment, anything. Rude, condescending, not Socratic, inaccessible, too interested in outside commitments and status to make a good instructor let alone professor. Did I mention the hubris is beyond compare? Profs Franzese or Green can teach this person how to engage and teach students.

Charming at first, a jerk when you have to ask him questions 1 on 1. His classroom presentation is clear and good. His exam was very strange and placed a lot of weight on topics we didn't cover

Barnes is a great teacher. He will call on you and ask some pretty tough questions, but he's not that bad about it. I enjoyed class. He really makes the material clear for you. Take good notes in class and you'll do well. On the exam just answer his question with a direct answer picking on side and support it.he doesn't want both sides of the issue

Comment:
In terms of tort law, Barnes is the smartest person in most classrooms; he's also honest when he can't answer your question without more research. People who think he's arrogant can't hack the socratic method, likely because they did not read their cases for class. For class notes that transfer seamlessly into an A outline, stick with Barnes.

Comment:
Torts is easy to understand on your own so Barnes is largely unnecessary in class, but he can be funny and encourages class discussion. BEWARE - he told someone in class that they were cute and said he would like to give some of us physical exams! Not a joke!!! Whoever said he was hot is ridiculous - he looks like Mr. Burns from the Simpsons.

His teaching style is very clear, and so is the book. If you can get past his arrogance and his tendency to pick on people in order to intimidate rather than teach, he is not that bad of a teacher. But he puts questions on his exams that we skimmed over in class, and ignores the things we stressed, which is sneaky.

great survey class, lots of fun, same great style of teaching. his books are clear and concise. all professors should write their books like this. however, if you don't like his exam style from torts, you won't like the similar ip exam.

Jake rocks. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a loser who's simply intimidated by his intellect. Yeah hes arrogant, but so what? The guy deserves it. His teaching style is a 1L dream. He's clear, explains things, makes you understand the material AND wrote the book so even if you were on IM in class you can still figure it out by reading at home.

Comment:
I had "Jake" Barnes for Torts while he was visiting last spring at George Washington. He is smug, condescending, and inaccessible to students. He has no doubts that he is the smartest guy in the room, and he lets you know it. On the final, there is no room for any answer other than his. Avoid him if you can.

Had him for IP and he was an average teacher. But his exam was terrible. He leaves a certain amount of space for you to fill in the answer? And if you don't compress it in, you lose points. What a joke!

Not only an excellent lecturer -- clear, funny, brilliant, but also kind, gentle, accessible. Utmost integrity. An extraordinary Professor and an even more extraordinary human being. I wouldn't have made it past my first semester without his support. Jake, if you're reading this, thank you!

Excellent professor. I can't believe people complain about him. He makes the material extremely easy to understand. So does the casebook, which he wrote. If you get assigned to him as a 1L, consider yourself lucky.

Best professor for torts at Seton Hall. Anyone who disagrees is a lazy slacker who didnt pay attention in class. He couldnt make the material any more clear during class time, and his book is written just the way he talks. Theres no way to do badly unless you just dont know the information.

Awesome. Always available and always helpful. Not like you have a choice for who you get first year, but if you get Jake be really thankful. Anyone who complains about him probably never went to class & was bitter about a bad grade at the end. There arent any suprises with him which is nice.
