Comment:

Doc is one of the most caring people on Harding's campus. He likes to joke and have fun. The ones who leave because of him, or get offended are just insecure and sensitive. It's all in good fun, people need to lighten up. He truly cares about the ones who care about him. And people need to quit being so sensitive and enjoy him and his humor.

Overall a good teacher, but critique was not always constructive. I cried during voice lessons (or after) frequently. I never was one of the favorites in his choir but I made it through the entire program and always felt like I had just to "prove myself".

He was the main reason I left Harding, how can Harding not have an opera program??? Why bother teaching music if you don't promote it's performance in ALL areas????? Ahwell now I'm at a performing arts school, being a SUPERSTAR!

Comment:

I was a 4 year member of choir and really love Doc. He is one of the two or three professors I make a point to see when I go back. Doc values commitment and loyalty and he expects that from his singers, even if you can only give one year of it. He is a very good teacher and a better man. And a great hearts partner on choir trips.

Those who don't like Doc are the ones who are lazy or overly sensitive. He runs a tight ship, but he will do his best to help you out if you are willing to try. He may come across as overly critical, but I rarely disagreed with his critique. If we sucked up a song or performance, he said so. If he said we did well, then we truly did!

I couldn't believe what I read about other peoples comments! Yes, Doc expects ALOT out of his students because who honestly wants to hear another local yocal choir?? If you pay attention and don't yack your butt off in class than you might actually learn alot and Doc won't be on your case. He's a straight forward guy, and I respect him alot!

Dr. Shearin is very driven, to the point that he alienates the choir (causing MANY to quit EVERY year without exception). Definitely not easy to read or get along with at all and very critical while very unwilling to admit faults of his own. Don't even think about missing one day either!!!

Dr. Shearin is a horrible professor. At a Choir function he called one student stupid and offended an Asian student making fun of her height.
