Three in class quizzes (on assigned readings that he provides) and five papers for overall grade. The papers help you learn to write better and analyze data properly. Pretty easy class, just focus and spend a good amount of time on writing really good papers and you will do well. No exams given!!

He is a nice guy and the class is easy. However, I have no idea how his class was approved to be taught at UCSD, as it the most useless nonsensical class ever. You will never use the material. Frankly, I got all A's for the series and still have no idea what the class is about. Maybe jets or something.

Don't take his classes unless you're required to. He is a nice knowledgeable person, but the class is very disorganized. You never know what you are required to do. He forgets to mention there will be 'in class' reviews, which you get 0 from even though you submitted and met all the requirements.I have never hated a class with this intensity.

Comment:
He is nice and often eccentric, but both of his class' materials are painfully boring. Most of the time I don't understand what he is saying, not because of his vocabulary, but because I can't simply get over how boring this class and simply focus. I could listen to him talking about other stuff for hours tho. Class materials are semi important.

Very nice guy who is reasonable. I enjoyed that the class wasn't based solely on MC exams.. Just keep up with reading material and you'll be fine. Not completely necessary to go to lectures but it's refreshing to be a student in the class where the professor is engaging and enthusiastic. Any discrepancies with peer grading I just emailed him.

The overall grade is based on writing assignments. The overall lecture is confusing at times and hard to understand what the main concepts are. Exams aren't worth much of the overall grade. Reading material is required but not always necessary to keep up with. Best to ask your TA's for as much help as possible.

week 10 and I haven't quite figured out what this class is about. something to do with south pacific navigation techniques. Hutchins: seems like a nice guy, enthusiastic, but rambles, and his book (required) isn't a great read. peer-graded papers are confusing and grading is skewed. wish the course wasn't required.

Five major projects in this course, but the material is useless. You will never have to apply it nor think about it after this class, so waste of time. I only took it because it was required. He also says he wants to help students, but never responds to emails (my friend and I tried five separate times). Thank goodness I'm done with this series.

He's a great professor who's motivated to help his students with projects. While we did learn things like "hopscotch," we analyzed things taken for granted in new contexts. Anyone complaining about "complicating the easy" did not pay attention in class. Very informative look at culture, but can be difficult. Requires a lot of effort on projects.

Basically, this class takes simple things you already know and completely obscures them using fancy words. Everything is overly complicated, from the slides to the books to the TAs. Easy course though: tip on the calibrations, if it says "50% req'd to pass" and they're all multiple choice, select all the same answer. If you don't pass, change them.

His class was so nonsensical that some students created a Hutchins meme to vent their frustrations. We learned about the practice of "cognitive ethnography." Our projects included taking pictures, conducting interviews, and making short films. If you want an A in the course then you have to play along. We also learned how to play hopscotch.

Obfuscated philosophy about cognition on boats and planes. Spends most of lecture on navigation techniques and random things, "[he] made up this morning." We wrote 5 peer-graded papers on awkward topics. Didn't bother with the book. Most students were checking w/each other to see if anyone else understood what was going on - they didn't.

The topics in this class are a bit vague and hard to understand. The examples given were unhelpful and the peer-review grading was ridiculous. Wish this class wasn't required.

Professor Hutchins is a nice teacher and seems to care about his students a lot, but the class material was very dry and mostly concentrated on ship navigation. There were no midterms, only a final, all multiple choice. Had to write 5 papers for the course.

Not a science class at all, entirely philosophical. Probably one of the most boring professors I've ever had. He just rambles on and on, never really saying anything particularly useful or interesting, at least not for a cognitive scientist. I wish this class wasn't mandatory for the cognitive science major.

you guys are trippin. Prof Hutchins has been my favorite prof so far, and 102B has been the most eye-opening class i've taken here. It seriously made me look at the world differently. The topics discussed are very thought-provoking and interesting...at least to me. Plus, he's a great guy, and lectures are never boring.
