She was a difficult professor because she wanted us to break out and "write," and not "just be our usual selves."

Great woman. I didn't take the class seriously then didn't do well on my first paper. Slow grader and doesn't give much feedback unless you go to her office hours- which were oftentimes cancelled or changed. All classes were discussion based. Never participated but did well on final paper and did well overall. Very caring

I took Dr Beth during my sophomore year and I would gladly take a class with her again. I've never had a professor that cares more about her students before, and when you talk in class she really does listen to what you have to say. She gives great feedback on written work. There's some moderate article reading to do, but that was the hardest part.

Nicest professor I've ever had. She was great at creating beneficial class discussions. Really great feedback on papers that help you work towards a good grade on final draft. You have to read, textbooks are necessary. If you try your best and really dive into the class discussions, an A will be easy for you. She's a professor you want to take!!!

Dr. Beth was my favorite professor. So kind and understanding, really opens your eyes and improves your writing. She was so easy to talk to in office hours and was incredibly amenable to individualizing projects if you wanted to try something different to the mark scheme. Absolutely take her!

Dr. Beth was a pretty cool professor. Easy grader. Really encouraged in-class discussion and debate, so it was fun. You didn't really have to pay attention much in class if you participated here and there. Get ready to read though. If you're struggling on a writing assignment, just take detailed notes in class; that will help a ton!

Possibly the nicest professor at Pitt, and definitely the best writing teacher. She cares about her students and she has high expectations for *improvement*, but doesn't expect you to be a good writer at the beginning. Offers tons of feedback and is always willing to meet for discussion.

She was such a nice lady! I felt bad that I wasn't a fan of the class. Writing essay after essay about gender and sexuality just wasn't my cup of tea.

I signed up for engcmp gender studies on accident and boy do i regret it. Spent the whole semester basically campaigning for pro-gay rights and if you werent for gay-rights you would get a bad grade. On top of that she is a very tough grader and you do not even know your grade until the midterm and then right at the end of class.

I had Dr. Matway in the Gender studies seminar in composition. This is such a worthwhile class. Discussions are very interesting and you really gain a lot of perspective on the gender system. Dr. Matway is super helpful and accessible when you are writing papers and is very in tune to the thoughts and needs of her students. Best teacher I've had.

Really nice lady! A little confusing with how she wants to run the class though. (First we were gonna do quizzes. Then we switched to 1 page responses. didn't assign essays with enough time to write them. etc.) BUT her exams are mega easy, she's a fair grader, and she's really nice and helpful. Take her!

Professor Matway is a great prof. She is very passionate about the class (Wild West) and she is there to help her students. She wants everyone to do well and grades very easily. You read a good amount of books but only have short quizzes on them and 3 papers throughout the year. Easy class.

Very sweet lady, but really confusing professor. Doesn't give you clear directions, grades harder than most. Told me toward the end of the semester to expect a B, ended up with a C+?

So friendly. Some very eye-opening class discussions. She grades tough and is not always completely clear about exactly what she looks for in your writing, but that is to be expected with subjective courses. She'll give a solid grade on a revision assignment if you truly make an effort to completely go a different direction from the first draft.
