The course is interesting and the prof does a good job in her lectures, but her assignments are so vague and getting a decent mark is a nightmare. Lectures are super heavy with content with not a lot of detail on the slides to attendance is a must.

Based off old reviews, it seems like Emma has changed and improved her teaching style. Her lectures are so engaging but *MANDATORY* (mostly bare slides), and shes quite funny/approachable herself. She told us exactly how to study for the (difficult) exams, but I admit her assignment details are usually vague/broad. Tough class but super interesting

Emma is legit probably the best lecturer you will ever have, especially if you're interested in the Sociology of Medicine. Normally I get tired of professors over the course of the semester, but I honestly felt so engaged and willing to learn until the very end of her class. She's also pretty funny and breaks the class up with movies-super helpful!

Course consists of 3 tests and 2 papers. Her tests are fair but tough. You have to memorize specific wording for her long answer questions so beware. Papers are strictly marked by different TAs so its difficult to improve and get a good grade, however they are not worth that much. If you are willing to put the work in, its a very interesting class.

If you don't attend her lectures good luck. She is a very difficult marker and doesn't seem approachable. I will say though that she is good about going over concepts in class if you do not understand any point during lecture. Typically a high 70s essay writer - didnt get higher than a 65 on her papers. Short tests so one Q wrong and it's over

Although her lectures are enjoyable and she is knowledgeable about what she teaches, Dr. Whelan is EXTREMELY condescending and unapproachable, so don't DARE try to talk to her in office or ask her any questions. She wrote on Brightspace: "grades are rankings of students' performance", meaning I am worth nothing more than the letter grade I receive

Tough but fair. The course had a ton of reading but I learned so much and the prof was great at explaining the really difficult material. Highly recommended.

Interesting content in the class but Whelan is so unapproachable and does not present herself as a resource for success. No review or exam outline. Bad TAs. Harsh marker. Sent a note the night before our final suggesting that if we want higher grades, we should invent a time machine and work harder. Rude, unprofessional, mean spirited.

Decent at lecturing, but unprofessional and condescending towards students. Sent out a message to our entire class telling us that she was unwilling to give any advice on how to study for the final and that if we want to improve our grades, we should "build a time machine." Thankfully, the TAs grade all of the papers. Don't take this course.

She is really passionate about the material and is very inspiring! Her tests are very straightforward and essentially easy points but the assignments are tough. I found the course very interesting and will be taking more courses with her!

Dr. Whelan is really nice and a great prof but can sometimes come off as impatient when asking for clarification. Very knowledgeable and really good at getting group discussions going. If you don't show up to class don't expect any sympathy from her when you ask for help. All in a good prof.

Emma is a fantastic lecturer! It is vital to attend every lecture, as not all of the information you need can be found on the slides. There are a lot of readings but they are all helpful in increasing your understanding of course material. Papers aren't marked too harshly, and tests are fair.

Whelan's classes are hard, but she is a great prof. you must attend class in order to pass, as a lot of stuff on the exams is from lectures, and the powerpoints do not explain much - she uses them as a guide while she talks in class. if you go to class and pay attention it's very interesting.

Dr. Whelan's classes have always proven to be my most inspiring and educational courses. I love the way she lectures and the insightexamples she brings to everything. Her readings are so carefully chosen and provide so many avenues for thought. I have never felt like I've wasted time (in class, doing an assignment); everything she does has purpose

Dr. Whelan is a fantastic lecturer who makes her criteria and expectations very clear! The organization of the course was flawless, interesting and even funny (which can be hard in sociology). The reading responses are a GREAT way to actually encourage you to read - which, believe me, you'll appreciate. I would take any course with Dr. Whelan!

I have the utmost respect for Whelan. This lady knows her stuff. She can be a bit intimidating, but she's actually very caring and willing to help her students. Her lectures are loaded, so don't miss a class! That being said, she's very clear and concise. Also extremely witty and sassy which is keeps things lively.
