Comment:
Professor Owen's class is a two for one deal, sign up for chemistry and get radical liberal politics for free. He's very good at teaching the material, but it isn't at all worth the baggage of the class. Be very careful what you say around him because he's very touchy about people with wrong opinions.

Grade is only made up of 3 tests, but there is an optional final that can replace 1 of your test grades. The tests are so incredibly difficult. I studied a lot and did a lot of chem in high school but still didn't do great. Most of the class scored around 50%. The final is the one from ACS so it's a ton easier than his tests. Chem online is rough

Really great professor! Cares a lot about his students and their success. Beware of TOUGH tests... average always in 50-60%. He does curve and has a generous grading scale. Great class if youre not scared of tough tests!

I took this class thinking Chemistry would be an easy (and interesting) fill for my math/science elective. While definitely interesting, I wouldn't take the class again unless it was required. Part of this was the difficulty. The exams were very difficult and most people got very low scores for the most part.

Professor Owens is great! The class is somewhat difficult if you have a hard time managing your time, but if you really utilize the materials he provides, you have a pretty good chance of doing well. There are only 3 tests (and curves them pretty generously) and a final, but he drops the lowest exam or makes the final optional. Super smart & funny!

Professor Owens straight up told my class he did not care if 95% of the class failed we would all receive F's on our transcripts. He refused to curve the test or the class ( you are only graded on 3 tests) and does not care how you do in his class. I was told if i didn't like this policy I should drop.... so thats exactly what i did.

I took chem 1 with Owens and loved it, i got an A, but he has completely changed the way he "teaches"the course and in my opinion has given up. The whole class is graded on 3 test the average being 60%, he believes the problem is his students not studying and not his lack of teaching. He said if i don't like my grade then i should just withdraw.

Greg created a pretty exquisite, generously-graded general chemistry sequence using ALEKS software to enhance learning. The course required good study habits and commitment but paid off in spades. He discontinued ALEKS Spring 2020, though. The course is now different, graded on fewer things. Good lecture videos. Good instructor.

Owens seems to genuinely care about his students. He made the final optional and lets you make up missed exam questions for half credit. The course primarily uses ALEKS, which you'll end up spending around 6 hours a week on. The program is super frustrating at times though. Plan your time accordingly and you will do well. Best prof for gen chem.

Professor Owens outlook on learning chemistry is respectable. He is more focused on his students efforts towards learning the material, than he is on test grades. He lets you rework test questions missed for half credit. Just do the homework on time, and study for the test and you'll pass with a surprisingly good grade.

Online chem 1210, although there were a ton of quizzes on random days he gives 3 tries, i never got less than 100% on a quiz, and its ALEKS heavy. Each exam builds on eachother so if you do better on the second or third (final) exam, it replaces your worse score(s). Im taking chem 1220 with him next semester!

Professor Owens was pretty chill, as long as you can manage your time the class isn't that hard. A lot of people hate Aleks, but its not that bad if you can figure out the patterns you are golden, owens was always able to meet with me when i needed help and some of the ta's were great at helping to, best part was when he made the final optional!

NO TESTS! More like online quizzes which are exactly like the homework so if you do homework, then you'll ace the "tests". If you're taking this course online be aware of due dates because some homework assignments will creep up on you. The module quizzes are just like the lectures/videos so pay attention to those.

Taking this chemistry class online was my biggest mistake. I had a very high college GPA and this class just tanked it. He uses the ALEKS system so all homework and exams are through that. If youve ever used it before, you know how awful it is and if you havent, stay away from it at all costs. Only think not on ALEKS are quizzes random. DO NOT TAKE

The online class is easy, but Owens is rather rude and unprofessional if you make him take time out of his real life to ask questions. So if you take the class, just make sure that you dont have to interact with him and the experience will be 10x better.

G Owens is brilliant & teaches at that level, w/ a broad vocabulary & sometimes fast pace. That said, his lecture videos are efficient, well-executed, often entertaining & helpful. His grading policy is unique & generous. As long as you can devote plenty of time, you'll do well. This course is challenging. ALEKS can be frustrating but is worth it.

Summer. Owens uses ALEKS, which is a lot of work and requires students to look into the explanation tab a lot. Combined with his video lectures, we're looking at a lot of time spent on this one class. The videos aren't super useful but are required for the quiz. However messing up a bit on exams seems to be fine if you put in the work all along.

Comment:
As someone who also took Owen's 1210 class, 1220 is much, much harder. Owens changed the way the online classes work, and its clear he and the department are still working out how to do it effectively. This class demands work, lots of work, and the knowledge checks don't always seem fair, but your grade may be better than in a normal class here.

Owen is a professor who will make you work for it, but don't view that as a bad thing. He posts weekly videos (for the online class) and you have homework due weekly. The homework can be tedious because he uses a program called ALEKS which is super obnoxious. Make sure to ALWAYS watch the videos - quizzes are all based on the videos.
