Kinney is by far one of the most passionate and compassionate professors at VCU. He is extremely understanding and always available for helpful as he has been teaching for some 30 years. His lectures are very informative and he is just an all around very nice guy.

Dr Kinney. A nice, DEAF, Grandpa. Go sit on his knee and hear a story about Race in the 19th Century while he pours you a glass of milk before bed. Do NOT take his class expecting to be enlightened by his intellect. Oh, he knows his history. But has no idea how to apply it to the subject at hand. Racist literature requires more than he can offer!

Other than his grading on a high school scale (93 and above = A) I loved everything about this class and professor. Kinney knows his stuff and challenges his students with tough grading on responses and papers. There is a one point quiz at the start of almost every class to show that you read the material, so go to class and work hard for your A!

Such a nice man, and the books he chooses for this subject are extremely interesting. I loved all the short stories and novels he assigned save for maybe 2 of them. A few short responses and pop quizzes on the readings, but they are extremely easy if you read.

This is a really good teacher. I took his class in 2005 and he really taught me alot. He really knows what he is talking about. He is helpful and makes you wanna get into what you are reading. The tests are pretty straight forward...If you listen to him and at least skim over the readings then you should be fine.

I really enjoyed all of the readings that he selected. He is a teacher who is very enthusiastic about literature and it shows in his lectures. He encourages class participation. The test were not difficult if you actually read the stories and pay attention during lectures. Essay paper is not difficult. PLEASE TAKE HIS CLASS! It is worth it!

I had Kinney for both American Lits. He's great. The readings he assigns aren't that painful. He's pretty easy on grading tests and quizzes, just be careful with your short papers. Don't retell the facts in these papers at all. Give him what you took from the stories and you will be fine.

I liked this class. Very easy to understand. Just do your assignments and you'll get at least a B. Be careful when writing papers, he's a little scrupulous.
