hes not bad. yeah he does have very high expectations and getting an A is very very hard unless you're a good writer. i'm not that great of a writer, tried VERY hard and still got a B+ even though i felt like i shouldve gotten higher. but he is nice

Jim is a cool guy. I wish I had him for something other than a lame writing class. He's a tough grader, (I got a B+, but I'm pretty sure I deserved an A), but he'll let you write about whatever you want, so that's a plus. I recommend.

He is horribly confusing, and his assignments don't get enough review to actually teach you what to put in them, he expects you to figure everything out on your own, and gets pissed if you're not early to class.

Jim's a really nice guy; he is definitely into rock and roll music. He is very clear about what he wants for assignments and gives students ample time and resources to get a good grade. He does have a tendency to allow students to get off topic and talk about whatever they want however.

This guy is a total wakko, but that that?s what makes the class fun. The books are a bit odd, but when spoke about in depth, the topics get very interesting. Overall, a great English class with no tests and a helpful teacher BUT a hard grader.

Jim is great. If you like music and are interested in learning about new music, he's your man. I didn't like all the music, but he taught me a lot. Easy going and approachable. I would recommend him.

Horrible music class. Learned nothing. And gives you low grades. But that's not all: Music played is not popular which makes the course title misleading. Students hate it. Don't buy the trash books!! Undeserved high ratings are likely from the lecturer.

Not very helpful. Border-line retarded attendance policies in a 250 person lecture caused many students to be in danger of failing. Loves to hear himself talk. Clueless about students.

Great professor and interesting lectures. He is clear and concise in his lectures. Work consisted of ER (electronic readings), a couple books (not textbooks), 2 blog entries a week on blackboard based on lecture and readings, and 2 papers in the year. Highly recommend this class, connects a lot for you musically as well!

I thought I would hate the class, but it ended up being enjoyable and helpful. Jim is a cool guy and knows his stuff. Papers get easier as the class progresses. Not as easy A, but getting a solid grade is definately possible (I got an A-).

Jim was an excellent prof. Coming to school for my first semester I dreaded having to take an English class. I thought that his class would by far be my worst class for the semester but Jim made the class so much fun that my highest grade of the semester came from his class. I definitely would recommend him as a prof.

Professor Deys is a very laid back and relaxed teacher. He hardly ever assigns homework, just readinds every so often. His papers are more than manageable and the class itself, I found, to be very easy and fair. A good introductory class to take and a good teacher to take it with.

This is a great class! The classes are run as open discussions and he encourages everyone to speak. Jim is a great teacher and very helpful. He is always clear about the assignments and when you go to his office hours, he is extremely helpful! If you take 115, only take it with Jim! GREAT TEACHER!
