He is inspirational - like the real role model he is. He teaches with passion and we can tell how much he loves what he does; and that is design. He does not give tons of homework and is flexible although strict other times.

industrial design is hard! john is helpful and cares a lot about his students. show that you care and want to learn and he'll do everything he can to help out. if you want an easy class, change your major instead of complaining about how "bad" john is. BEST teacher/mento you can find in the major.

Comment:

Single-handedly made me change my major. I had NO CLUE how I was doing in his class, since in crits he either praised the best designers at length, or made fun of the poor ones. I fell in the middle and never got any significant feedback, despite staying after class "in line." Lectures were pointless, he talks about himself a lot, totally arrogant.

John is the cork plugging the hole in the bottom of the ID boat that keeps it from sinking completely. If you can get past the regurgitated stapler lectures and forklift slideshows, he is a good teacher. On the whole, this program is pretty handicapped compared to others, but just like everything else in life, you get out of it what you put into it

Comment:

Not having John for several semesters made this fall's class even that much better. Finally, back to having an ID professor that motivates, inspires, and actually provides clarity to the classes' process (which was painfully lacking in "another" professor's class). Makes you want to work harder, sketch more, and deliver a portfolio worthy project.

John's classes are tough, but if you put in the work you get so much out of them. He is the reason so many of us have stayed in the program. Yes, you know who is lame and makes us all want to get a design studies degree, but if your complaining about john, then your just looking for someone other that yourself to blame for how much your work SUCKS!

inspirational and the most motivated of the design professors. Can be really moody and pissy but you have to show him you're the alfa-student and make him give you feedback. His dry humor makes him come off rude, but his intentions are very good. Most organized of the overall disorganized faculty.

Can't teach? Steals ideas?!? Sounds like some people are pissed they didn't pass 1st year review. John's an approachable and gifted teacher who makes tough subjects clear. Just look at the quality of the work in his classes. If those other students didn't get it, they weren't paying attention!
