This is his 2nd class I took. If you work hard/pay attention, you'll be fine. Attendance is not mandatory, it is encouraged b/c his tests are based off of the lectures. Assignmentsminimal, but do the essays early so he can look over them; his feedback is great. If you make the changes, your grade will notice. He cares and if you have questions,ASK

Dr. Roth is very knowledgeable in his courses. I recommend taking him if you like history in depth. His exams are tough, requiring a lot of studying. When it comes to grading the two compare and contrast essays, he is a generous grader. No homework is a plus!

Roths class requires work, like all university courses should. The class is heavy lecture so be prepared to take good concise notes (probably a good idea to use a laptop as we jump fast). Overall, I recommend taking his class.

So, to the person below who took the same course as me: it was a MILITARY history class. Doesn't that give it away? Anyway, I recommend Professor Roth's military courses. They're lecture heavy and you're required to do quite a bit of reading. Lots of material, but if you're interested like I was, then it's a piece of cake. Very intelligent dude.

One sided. Overly militaristic. Is history just about wars?

4 Online Quizes, 2 book reviews, and 2 midterms. Quizes were not that bad, make sure to proof read and don't use direct quotes in your papers, and Midterms contain Matching, Multi Choice, and Essay. Study Guides Roth provides weren't helpful, use lecture notes. Overall good professor, knows his stuff, but his lectures were fairly disorganized.

He knows his material. However, he rambles a lot and it is sometimes hard to follow along. His exams are pretty fair. He is pretty full of himself and makes random subtle anti- religious remarks at times.

If you don't love the topic, don't even think of this class! The professor really is an expert and encourages independent thought...as long as your views ultimately agree with his. He teaches from memory and rambles a LOT! He is a stickler for grammar and an antiquated, boring, old-fashion writing style. His review lists & attendance are required.

He is a good teacher, interested in his topics. Runs off on tangents too much. His exams were multiple choice, which were hard, I much prefer essay questions. Although, a good teacher, would not take again, unless absolutely nescessay.

It is almost impossible to take notes in his class, he jumps all over the place, goes off on tangents that have nothing to do with anything, hard to stay focused in his class, review sheets are no help, just a huge amount of terms, one midterm, a final, and 2 book reviews.

He's a difficult instructor, but very passonate about the subject matter. You'll be taking notes like crazy but you won't be bored-- his lectures are fun and exciting (if you like history at all). I really enjoyed his Byzantine class.

Professor Roth knows his stuff and is very enthusiastic about what he teaches but following his lectures is difficult. He constantly goes on tangents that eventually lead back to the topic 20 minutes later. I suggest taking his classes if you like military history because he covers it in every topic. Also bring something to record with for ease.

Incredibly engaging teacher, i have now had him for military history, and byzantine history, he has a way of keeping the class interested on even the most mundane subjects. However he gets side tracked very easily and rarely fallows his own syllabus, tests are easy as long as you pay attention.

Good class, his tests are pretty easy and he is a pretty lenient grader. Only problem is that the class fell behind and only through 1/4 of the material.

Professor Jonathan Roth is one of my favorite history professors at San Jose State University, he is also the head of the history department. He is strict in your writing, but he is pretty straightforward. He is fun to have with in any of the history classes that he teaches. You should take good notes to study, exam is multiple choice and essay.
