The class is pretty much discussion based and she accepts any opinions or thoughts you have even if she might disagree. The class is really interesting and it made me look at language than I hadn't before. There is homework but it isn't hard. Quizzes are 7 questions max and are usually in the testing lab but we could take our final quiz anywhere :)

Kuha does a great job at delving into different dialects, why they exist, & how they function and effect society. You will read lots of linguistic research studies too. I would say the 2 downsides are the sometimes dry lectures (try not to zone out) and the small point system. Also, try to stay off your laptop as much as possible.

She is a nice person but I am not a huge fan of her as a teacher. She makes all of the homework out of 1 point and everything else out of 5 so if you do less than perfect on one assignment your grade tanks. She is very specific on what she is looking for but doesn't tell you so when you redo assignments you don't know what to change.

Dr. Kuha's lecture are very confusing and she is very condescending. There are lots of group projects in this class but she makes the groups for you. You don't know your total grade in the class for the whole semester. She has a grade calculator online, but it isn't useful at all. Her canvas page is very confusing as well. Would not take this class

Comment:
Dr. Kuha is incredibly smart. 220 is lecture heavy, and the material is sometimes political, but it shouldn't be a problem if you let yourself get involved with the readings. Ask questions, notice linguistic phenomena around you, and be open minded. Do the work punctually, form educated opinions, and the grade will be easy. It's a valuable course.

I've never had a professor over-explain things. She sort of has a tendency to harp on on certain subjects to the point where it's sort of an overkill. However, the class itself was fairly easy and the quizzes are all open book.

While she is very nice, the class itself was very uninteresting and felt like a waste of time and money. I never paid attention and ended up just stopped caring entirely, but still got a decent grade. She very much enjoys doing group projects and making you "discuss with a neighbor," so expect it a lot.

While she obviously knows her subject very well, questions are met with "well not all the time..." or a more confusing answer. Also group projects are 100% of the time so get used to your group. Also the packet you have to buy is absolutely necessary, you will use all of it. Quizzes are a huge pain and will tank your grade if you're not careful.

She is very nice, but she isn't always clear with what she wants in the projects. She's willing to help you, but most of the time I was left more confused than helped during homework and projects. She uses powerpoints a lot, so make sure you take good notes. There is a packet you have to buy for class and you WILL use all of it. GROUP WORK!!

She says attendance is important because you do group work every day, but I skipped over 1/3 of the classes and passed with an A-. Showing up to class was pointless. We listened to songs to pick out parts of speech. Great prof, funny and knowledgeable, but wasted my time by filling the class with stupid busy work. Should be offered online only.

The topics we covered were pretty interesting at times, but her lectures were very boring. The only tests were the midterm and final, and they were open note. There were a lot of group projects with presentations, but you don't really get graded on the presentation. Expect to write a lot of small papers.

Kuha is very knowledgable, however, whenever a question is asked, she does not answer it at all. She will twist your words and ask you an even more confusing question. She is extremely condescending when you question what she is teaching. It was like taking two classes because you have to focus so hard on understanding her broken english.

Only two tests, midterm and the final, however she allows a cheat sheet for both. Prior knowledge in phonology and phonetics is helpful, expects you to learn from the book. Her group project was very confusing, ended up not really being a group project because you had to present the entire thing individually. Takes attendance.

Dr. Kuha is pretty laid back. She is nice, helpful, and understanding. She takes attendance, and there is a midterm and a final. Everything else is just reading responses. Be prepared to talk to your fellow classmates often.

She was an alright professor but gives you a reading assignment for most classes that require a response on Blackboard of 2 or 3 questions. Most of them are pretty long but you can usually complete the Blackboard response without reading the whole article. I probably only read two total and got an A. Also, NO TEXTBOOK!

Dr. Kuha is really nice. She runs the class like a discussion group, so if you hate talking to other people, this isn't the professor for you. No textbook, just readings that you access for free. English isn't her first language, but she is fluent and easy to understand. It's only confusing when the class is reluctant to ask for clarification.

Can't teach well, expects you to know new information after first reading on own and quizzes you before explaining it. She's nice enough but tech isn't allowed in class and you have to rely on group members if you don't understand something.
