While P. Beckman obviously knows what she's talking about, her ability to articulate what she wants to say is pretty low. I had to interpret a lot of what she was saying after she said it. It helps that she had a sharp TA and the grading for the class assignments/labs almost boiled down to if you tried or not, which was nice.

Dr. Beckman is a genius; however, she is not a good teacher, at least not of this class. She is confusing, hard to follow, scatterbrained, and expects students (mostly ling majors) to have a firm grasp on computer code. She also gives an excessive amount of homework. She's very nice and energetic, though. Still, I wouldn't recommend the class.

Mary is pretty awesome! She is a genious! Extremely easy grader and she loves what she is doing! Teach yourself "R" before you take her course b/c you will use it a lot! She holds amazing discussions and knows what she is talking about! I absolutely recommend her has a prof! Wonderful person and even worked with Peter Ladefoged!

600.01 was a tough class. Make sure you've taken ling 500 at least before this class. It is assumed that you know the IPA and everything in the acoustic and auditory phonetics textbook already. Mary is really nice though and will gladly help you during her office hours. Oh, and be ready for confusing computer programs like Praat and R.
