In my experience, Prof. Furgol was impossible to please. One time, after getting a bad grade on my last paper, I spent more than 9 hrs on a paper for her. I read the required secondary sources and even spent two hours on the primary sources (not required). She gave it a C and when I asked for feedback, she said to reflect more... I had spent 9 hrs!

Comment:

I took HIST114 as an online class for Summer I. It's an excellent History class. There are weekly papers and weekly Black Board discussions. There are two large papers due at the end of the semester that are semester long projects. She likes historical analysis that looks at different perspectives (i.e. class, gender). Keep on top of deadlines.

Currently taking her online class, and it's been a positive experience because she's very detailed and organized. There is a lot of reading and writing (no tests). She grades fair and responds to questions right away. I would definitely take another online course with her.

Legitimately the best lecturer Ive ever had. I wish I found her earlier so I could have taken more than one of her classes before I transferred. I left every lecture feeling like the subject we talked about that day was the most interesting thing in the world. Shes hilarious and amazing. Hard class but SO worth it!!!!!!!! TLDR: take her!!!

I loved taking her class! She is a sweet professor and kept me interested in the topics. I loved the discussion board assignments! Responds to e-mails and grades papers quickly. I learned a lot. The only thing that made me nervous was that the class only consists of 100 points, so that doesn't leave a lot of room for error before your grade drops.

Fantastic lecturer, very helpful outside of class, makes the material come alive! She really changed the way I think. Open to new ideas. Her one big downside is that she's the hardest grader EVER. I'm typically an A student but I never got an A on anything with her. Barely managed to finish the class with a B.

Prof. Furgol is very fair and graded me according to my work despite the fact that I questioned the course material in a critical fashion.She is always helpful,makes very clear what she wants in an assignment.She is prompt and clear in emailing.Her class is ALOT of writing but one of the better classes I have taken here.She is one of the best.

She is a very brilliant woman, yet I would NOT recommend taking her class online. Taking this course will make you think very hard, it is just too much online. It is only out of 100 points also, so there is absolutely no room for error. So take her course at the college, and not online, and you should be ok as long as you are willing to work hard

I am being very objective here. Her personally and manner of teaching definitely make her an interesting teacher. The only problem I had with her is that her lectures often are injected with her ideological viewpoints. I found her to be very critical of certain topics, while she talked about how we should judge history with open lens and whatnot.B-

She is the best professor I've ever had at MC. She's a masterful storyteller, so every lecture she gives is both brilliant and fascinating (no matter what the topic is). She's so nice, and very helpful both in class and if you meet with her individually. Her Scottish accent is a bonus :)

One of the BEST Professors I've ever had!!! Professor Furgol's lectures are some of the best. She really gives you a clear picture as to what is going on. She is not an easy teacher, but if you do the work and listen to what she has to say, you'll learn a lot. She is a rare breed of excellent teachers. Take her class, you wont be disappointed!

Amazing Prof. She's hard but when you listen to her lectures, they are amazing and history really does come to life. I've never seen any prof. teach as passionately as she does. She's a wonderful person to just talk to also.

The kindest woman out there, but she's not an easy A. If you work really hard you should do ok. Other than that, her personality and caring attitude is enough to make up for her toughness on grading. She really pushes you to think outside the box.

Furgol's lectures are some of the best history lectures I've ever had. She also got something like the best college professor in Maryland award. She's a funny lady, who keeps you interested while being informative. Slightly hard grader, but always willing to help.
