She critiques everyone very specifically on book illustration. Very blunt about your flaws, good if you're pursuing the same field as her but bad & misleading if you're in a field she is unfamiliar with. Students claim she has insight on both game and animation industry but it's unsure & unreliable. Her view on those can sound very black and white.

Mary-Jane is very experienced in children's storybooks, but in other fields not so much. WYS is a class about narrative art but outside of book illustration, don't expect to take away from the comics of game critique (better off taking the actual (Comics or Making Play course). WYS's a superficial and broad exploration of those illustrative mediums

The only thing I learned in this class is that complementary colors look good together. Mary Jane confused a lot of people while explaining very simple things. She also made us use her very specific technique of watercolor and acrylic painting for most of the class, which was too restrictive.

Okay, I hated doing every single assingment for this class. And I hated doing the in class paintings as well. So I pretty much didn't like the class. But I learned a LOT. I was able to apply everything she said and taught us to the paintings that I've been doing in other classes and on my own, and my color has improved dramatically.

I learned everything about color. The class was hard and Mary Jane runs a tight ship - but well worth it. I think everyone in Illustration should be required to take this class.

hard class. Learn a lot. Mary Jane is a color master, you'll get a lot out of it, and she's really helpful and takes genuine interest in your work.
