One of the illustration department's finest educators. Robert encourages students to challenge themselves conceptually and offers fantastic critique, both honest and constructive. Because his crit is honest, it may sometimes seem harsh at times, but it is always presented as an opportunity to improve, learn, and just become a better illustrator.

I took Illust I with him, and while I won't say it changed my life, it has been the best class I've had so far at Brown/RISD. And that's saying a lot. Despite the fact that I'm a Brown student, he still had time to talk to me and figure out how I was doing in class, and he was always very helpful and encouraging. Def take his class.

Robert is very articulate, and is a wonderful professor. He encourages critical thinking (no matter how unpopular) and is very open to new directions. A fun guy to be around and a very good person. He will help you with many things despite his busy schedule (he is the Dean of Illustration). If something is important, don't be afraid to remind him.

Birkerhoff is a great professor to learn about real-life illustration from. He's active in the market and he knows what works. He's also really great to communicate with. He is very personable and always remembers, or tries to remember his students.
