Class was pretty okay. Lectures are large so you don't need to pay attention, but exams are pretty difficult and completely essay based. Not a single multiple choice. Also made exams harder during corona? Class also included papers, reading homework every week, and a group project. Melanie makes it more hard than the class is worth.

Dr. Goan has been one of my favorite professors. She is incredibly knowledgable about history and it shows in her lectures. You need to complete the readings, if you sparknote the books youll be fine. Dont rely on the prezis, you need to pay attention to the lecture too. Her exams are not too tough, I can make an A by studying the night before.

I'm a business major with a minor in history and this class was so much harder than it needed to be. The TA I got was the worst you could possibly get so this is a review for him. Fletcher is by far the worst TA I've ever seen. Not only can you not understand him but he grades your exams and papers as a 300 level class. Fletcher wasn't nice at all!

I would not recommend this class. There is 3 tests and you have to memorize so much information for only a quarter to be on there. They consist of identifications and an essay. The TA's do the grading. You have to read 3 books and right a long paper on them. It is pointless to go to class because her lectures consist of prezis with no information.

Professor Goan is an amazing teacher, but I would not recommend this class if you're not from Kentucky as it will be more difficult. Class has easy weekly readings, 2 essays, and 2 exams. Participation and coming to class matters.

I almost lost my 4.0 because of this class but an A is possible with lots of effort. She is a super picky grader when it comes to papers and exams but she is open to helping you during office hours. She puts a lot of emphasis on participation and will give you a low score if you do not speak in class. Weekly reading quizzes, two essays, two exams.

The class is straightforward, but there are three books you have to read that are pretty pointless. The exams are all short answer/ essay so you really have to study for them. Overall, good class and nice professor.

If you want an easy A, Melanie Goan's HIS109 class is not one by any means. I would suggest not taking this class if you have the chance. The exams are all written responses, and there are several difficult papers. Attendance is not mandatory at all because the material on the study guides are just on quizlets that you can find online.

Fantastic professor! Her class is very straight forward if you come to class everyday. If you do assignments according to the rubrics you will get an A. Tests are very straightforward with no surprises.

I wouldn't consider this class to be an "easy A" by any means. There are a few papers along with three tests. She tells you exactly what will be on the exams, it's just a matter of memorizing all the material. Tests are all short answer and essay.

Professor Goan was one of the best I have ever had in college. Her enthusiasm and passion for teaching this course is something that I really enjoyed. If you are not from Kentucky, you will learn a vast amount of important/awesome history of Kentucky. Likewise, if you are from Kentucky there are things that I learned that I did not know prior.

Dr. Goan is super passionate about this class which will rub off on you! Definitely need to go to class and participation matters. She understands that not everyone wants to speak so she gives you other opportunities to get your points. Amazing professor!

Dr. Goan is amazing! She definitely makes you work for your grade, but showing up to class and participating is key to getting the grade you deserve. She is very personable - I highly recommend to take her class if you want a professor who actually cares. Dr. Goan is by far one of my favorite professors on campus.

Attending class is definitely not necessary. For our tests my notes were useless and you can complete the echo without having to be in class and you'll get the participation points for "being there". She's a good teacher but I just lost interest because it was honestly pointless in attending class. Didn't enjoy having to read 2 books as well

Dr. Goan gives really good, in depth, easy to understand lectures. You have homework assignments every week but you can find them word for word in the free online textbook. Everything you do outside of lecture falls under your TA and mine was super helpful which made it easier.

If you like history its great. There's lots of reading and listening to her talk about history. She uses Prezi... Also, food. Like our books are about food. And our paper is about food. It's not awful, but I won't take again. If you study for your tests, you will pass. All open ended and identification of words.

Amazing professor! She gives really clear and in-depth lectures that are interesting to listen to. Expect two homework assignments for the reading weekly. There is an essay on two long books you have to read throughout the semester, but you can honestly maybe get away without reading them if you can write well enough. Tests require you to study!

Makes you read tons of books throughout the semester and sometimes overlaps them making you read multiple at a time. Gets kind of confusing. Class is ALL discussion based. She's nice but a tough grader. If you take a class with her be prepared to read, write multiple papers, and take essay and term structured exams, no multiple choice!
