Comment:
Grade automatically goes down for missing more than two classes, which is unfortunate because when she canceled class its not clear if its canceled or still going to happen. Tests are content heavy and require information from every class lecture so taking notes is mandatory. So much reading that I couldnt focus on my other classes assignments.

She's knowledgable and cares a lot, which made me passionate about the AIS. BUT, AIS is not my major, I took this course thinking it would be easy to satisfy a requirement. There was WAY too much reading and I had to take a lot of time for this class which made me upset because I lost time to focus on my major. Don't take if this isn't your major.

Worst professor I had at state. She doesn't know how to use ilearn, never gave back graded work and is not always timely with email responses. In order to know how your doing in her class you need to email her but since she is always behind in grading, it's impossible to know if this "grade" is accurate or not. Incredible unorganized.

I had her for American Indian Ecology. I think she is really one of the world's experts on the subject but she is also very down to earth and flexible about the way the class is run. She brought in a lot of great guest speakers and took the class on some cool field trips. Only downside was that she would routinely let class out 10-15 minutes late.

She's a warrior woman! Passionate, intelligent, knowledgeable, fantastic teacher. I knew almost nothing about Native Am women and learnt A LOT in this class. I don't have enough words to recommend her classes. The books were super interesting and the classes fun. Group work and two papers (midterm and final) with tons of freedom to choose the topic

Melissa is such a great teacher. If you're interested in Native American culture at all, I highly recommend taking one of her classes. There's a lot of reading, but it's all easy and fun. She requires you to do an oral midterm, one five page paper of your choosing (so long as it pertains to oral lit.), and an oral presentation for the final.

Melissa is very nice, but Im not sure she should be teaching. She's involved in a lot of outside programs that distract her. It causes her to cancel class alot, give incomplete lectures, and rely on guest speakers. It was OK, but felt like a waste of my time, the worst part is that she requires 2 outside field trips which are usually on Saturday.

Great, eye-opening class. Clear teaching style. Takes attendence every class, but you'll want to go to class so it shouldn't be a problem. Passionate about the subject, lots of guest speakers. Good discussions in class and listens to the students. Great women, very intelligent. Take this class, Native Americans need people to hear their story.

very kind & considerate woman :-)! even tho it's an oral lit class, she leaves it up to u whether or not u do a presentation. very eye-opening lectures about Native American history in the U.S. and the importance of story-telling in our lives and for every age :-)! you start to the ignorance and haughtiness of western society ...

Melissa is an outstanding teacher from the beginning until the end of the semester. This class is fun throughout the semester because I learned more about the history of California and American Indians in a semester than ten years of my education. Therefore, I recommend this class to all. I love this class.
