DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! It's an online class, so everything revolves around canvas, but her canvas page is all over the place. We have online quizzes, but you have 5 minutes to answer 10 questions and one of those was a fill in the blank where the answer should have been editor, but she only had true and false as options. DON"T TAKE THIS CLASS!!

Comment:

Dr. Carstarphen is hands down one of the worst professors I've ever taken. I took her for an online class and I don't believe she actually knows how to use Canvas. I would receive email notifications of grade changes almost every day and go to find nothing had been changed. Most disorganized class. Group projects - in an online class. Just bad.

Comment:

Do not take this class, bottom line. It was so horrendously managed and the grading criteria was never clearly displayed for anything. This is the worst class Ive taken in my entire life at any level. Im hoping to discuss removal of her as the teacher for this course with the dean of the college, thats how bad it was. Dont take it.

Comment:

Seems like a nice person but the online class is a huge mess. The canvas is always out of whack and reporting inaccurate grades which makes it hard to track progress. Additionally, little instruction is given for big assignments (group projects) and students are left feeling confused and stressed. Wouldn't recommend this online class.

Most unorganized I have probably taken. Dr. C is actually a very sweet lady and really does want everyone to succeed. My best advice I can offer is to go into office hours and ask questions to show her you are actually trying.

Dr. Carstarphen is incredibly kind in a one-on-one setting. Other than that, she lacks respect for her students and their well-being. She hates in-class questions, struggles to give clear directions and has an unbalanced, heavy workload for her class. This semester has forced me to accept that technicalities in a rubric trump the quality of my work

This was by far one of the worst classes I have taken. Dr. C does not provide any clarification on her assignments and gets extremely irritated when people try to ask questions. The work load is heavy and she does not provide much help at all unless you are able to take the time to go to her office every week. Overall her class is confusing & hard.

Dr. Carstarphen is an empathetic human being. She's a sweet woman, but has zero patience for anyone in the classroom. As a professor, she offers very little clarity, contradicts herself in the syllabus, and gets physically bothered when we try to gather information about whatever the subject may be. I wouldn't recommend her.

Dr. C is a genuinely good person, I believe. However, she is not a very good professor. She favors girls over guys. She assigns a large amount of homework and the majority of the assignments do not really seem relevant to the field. She is out of touch with the current PR world, in my opinion. When you ask her for clarification, she gets defensive.

To get an A- Read the online lessons and watch the videos. She bases how she wants your work/writing done on those. Be prepared with what you want to do with your next project when you go to you 2 on 2 meetings with her. That will help immensely. Search on Google how to write what you're writing or doing. Choose a client who has just started out.

I do not recommend taking any course with this professor unless you don't want to learn a single thing. Finals are over, the Summer has begun and grades are due, yet she still hasn't entered grades in from assignments we completed week 1. I urge you to not take her, no clarity, no help, no structure at all. The worst experience of my life.

Seems to favor girls over guys. Really doesn't know much about PR in today's day and age. She has a heavy background in research and journalism, but a weak background in the current PR world. Sub par compared to other professors in the college.

I had public relations writing with Dr. C and she definitely tests her students. She is always willing to help if you meet with her in person and she really prepares students for the real world of public relations.

Carstartphen is awesome! She is very nice and is willing to help all the time. I took all my papers into office hours and got an A on all of them. She even lets you redo them if you don't like the grade. She is a slow grader and a little unorganized, but that just means you get more time on assignments!

Worse class I have ever taken at OU. This professor does not care about her students or how well you do in class. This class is unorganized and unfair. It could be really interesting, however, It turned out to be a waste of time. This professor is rude and not helpful one bit. Little to no guidance with what is going on in class.

Unfortunately I took at least 2 classes with this woman. I graduated in 2004 and still cannot stand her. My class was divided into groups mine having been all male. She graded us the lowest in the class on every assignment and mocked us as she did it. A student in my group approached the Dean about it and incredibly our grades skyrocketed.

The WORST instructor at Gaylord. Why is she still there? No rhyme or reason to grading system. She did not return mid term exams for well over a month. Plus, she only taught 5 classes. The rest of the time the students taught. Each person had to teach 2 classes and this was an undergrad class/no reason for students to be teaching classes at all!

she is hands down one of the worst teachers at OU. she most definitely plays favorites and actually mocks the people that she dislikes. she grouped everyone according to their grades therefore putting all the "slower" people in one group. needless to say they all failed the class. she is an idiot and simply reads out of a horrible, useless textbook. any class she teaches is guaranteed to be a complete waste of your time and energy. i can't stand the woman.
