Comment:
Try to avoid. He never explains his questions. Expects you to figure out what he is thinking. This biochemistry does not correlate with the MCAT or medical school curriculum. He puts material on exams that are never covered in the class. Time spent on this course will negatively impact your other classes. This class will give you test anxiety.

An excellent professor that has a bad rap at MSSU because he will not hold your hand throughout the semester. You will learn a lot in this class, but if you are just looking for an A then avoid him because unlike other professors he actually has somewhat high standards for students.

This is the online chemistry for allied health sciences and it is TERRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. Don't be like me and read a bad review on here and still believe you can do it. The class is a complete mess. There is SO much material and should be worth more credits. He doesn't lecture so be ready to teach yourself everything. DO NOT TAKE THIS!

Dr. Garoutte is a challenging but rewarding prof. He will make you put in more work than any other Organic professor at Southern, (which isn't a bad thing). He really wants his students to not only try, but to care. To at least find something interesting in the topics. He gets a bad rep, but he does want his students to succeed. USE OFFICE HOURS

I took Chem for Allied Health Sciences online. It's a mess! Lecture and Lab are separate classes, so the grades won't average. It's a ton of work, and the work you do is NOTHING like the "quizzes" which are biweekly exams. 7 sections with 7 short quizzes per 2 week exam. Plus 2 labs with lab reports and quizzes. I've never worked so hard for a C-.

By far the hardest class I've taken in my entire school career. Dr. Garoutte DOES NOT LECTURE. Ever. Even when the entire class specifically asks him to. All of the work is done out of a workbook (Chegg for the answers because they're nowhere else). He will not meet with you outside of class, refuses to help, and wants to see his student struggle.

I am a chemistry major and had him for organic chem 2. Absolute worst teacher. Orgo is NOT an easy class.. and he makes sure it stays that way. Does not lecture, does not do notes, does not let you ask questions. If you ask him questions he literally gets angry and makes you feel dumb like "you should already know this stuff."

I took CHEM120 online over summer which is an 8 week semester with it being my only class. If you must take this class online, do it during a 16 week semester. If you have to take it during summer, I would hope you aren't working full time (part time at max) and with no other classes. Dr. G is fantastic, I hope to be in other classes of his.

Solid choice. He's actually funny. Quite pleasant as a person. A little heavy on group, but as long as you show you tried, you'll be fine.

I took Chem 1 and 2 in high school. Taking those classes helped with the foundation for this course. You do everything in group work in class and he doesn't lecture but he will help you if you ask. He's very intelligent and cares about helping you succeed if your goal is to succeed. He does test reviews before every test. Participation is key.

The class is hard. It makes you use analytical thinking, which is the key to doing well on MCAT, GRE, PCAT, etc. If you work hard, do all the work, attend all the lectures, and are an able student you will be fine. If in doubt, go and talk to him (not last minute). If you are not able to do this class then you may need to reconsider your major.

You either love or hate his teaching style. Personally, I wasn't a fan of it. It's too reliant on group work and he doesn't "lecture", per se. Whereas for the majority of classes you have material presented to you and then practice at home, it's the inverse here. Biochem is hard enough as-is. He is a nice guy, but I don't feel like I learned much.

Great teacher. He cares about his students' success. Explain concepts in a clear and simple way. As long as you read the book and have great team members (or if you do your homework), you will do fine.

I am an all A student, and a part of the honor group next semester. I do very well in sciences but this professor was an absolute disaster. I advise nobody to take his class. He's okay as a person. But, he does not lecture and assigns you groups. My group drug me down to nearly failing. His tests are hard and his grading criteria is unbelievable.

This course can be difficult given the subject is Chemistry but Dr. Garoutte is fantastic. If you need help he is more than happy to go above and beyond to make sure you understand the problem and get the help you need. He is super nice and knows Chemistry very well.

He's smart... but absolutely the worst teacher I've ever had. He literally has created this little notebook with child style problems and they only way you learn anything about chemistry is by the people in your groups that he assigns you. He does not lecture and I actually feel dumber after taking this course

Dr. G is the hardest org teacher at MSSU but you will learn the most from his class. The way he teaches can make orgI difficult because many of the students that take it are not good at chem but for org2 it was great.

He is a great teacher. He really cares about his students success and works hard to make sure we understand and enjoy it. This is a science class for elementary teachers and once he realized we were chemistry majors, the class was awesome. Great person and great teacher!

As a person, Dr. G. is a nice person, but his teaching style was not for me. He does no lectures. You work in groups for everything. Chem. is just too hard a subject to figure out on your own. I do not recommend him unless it is basically a review class for you.
