Comment:
Typical of any English class, he requires a lot of reading. My complaint with him and this class is that we had very few assessments, thus very few opportunities to improve your grades. The only real points came from a short paper and the final. He also doesn't give clear expectations for papers he expects you to know what he wants.

A very fun teacher to take if you enjoy the subject! I took ENGL 3100 and loved everything about it! You will write a lot and he expects you to write really well, but there is a take home midterm and a creative response final project!

A super interesting professor! Expects greatness and he's very intelligent! You will write 8 500-600 word literature analysis and you have a take home mid term and final!

Dr. Gatrell is Oxford educated, therefore expect to be taught by an Oxford graduate. He is a harder grader, something that he admits, but I still found his comments helpful in improving my writing. His lectures are insightful and he doesn't mind answering questions. He is a little scatter-brained, but I would take his class again.

Comment:
I would agree with many other reviewers. Dr. Gatrell's lectures were entertaining, but the grading was extraordinarily unfair. I have never received less than an A- in an English class and have a B- in Dr. Gatrell's. Going to his office hours was useless-- he told me what to improve on, I did, and he arbitrarily gave me another B-. Don't take.

Comment:
Oxford educated Dr. Gatrell suffers no fools in his class. But! If you read the material, and attempt discussion, he is entertaining, patient with lack of deep knowledge on the subject, and a tough, fair grader. His classes are hard, but he is more than willing to help you get better. Don't take anything he offers unless you plan to actually work.

Unless you have prior knowledge and/or experience in the subject matter, I would advise that you avoid at all costs! I never leave reviews, and I have a 3.93 GPA. I thought this class would be interesting and easy, but it turned out to be one of my few B's even though I worked VERY hard. The grading is arbitrary and flip.

Make sure you're interested in the British Isles and not just England and pay attention to the maps. He's scatterbrained and during the semester he would crash into desks and keep walking. Use your computer to take notes or you might not be able to keep up. No matter what others say, he is knows what he's talking about and he will answer questions.

Wonderful man, nice to listen too, a bit scatterbrained. Can be a bit sarcastic but very helpful if one is willing to listen.

Very lecture-heavy class (didn't allow for much class participation). Tests are open notes, though, which helped a lot. Incredibly tough grader, especially on papers. I wouldn't recommend taking him.

He may appear to be nice and has a lovely accent but he isn't overly nice one on one. He is sarcastic one on one and not helpful. Half the time he forgets what he's been talking about and doesn't have notes. Very hard on papers and makes fun of you for your mistakes. Take someone else if possible!

No homework means nothing to prepare for but I didn't enjoy that. 3 grades only: paper & presentation, midterm, final. Hard grader. Not helpful one-on-one. Awkward. Though he knows his stuff - Would not recommend.
