Steve Johnson is extremely passionate about debate and an expert in the field of public speaking. One of the most valuable classes I have taken. Daily quizzes, but lets you decide how you want to be graded. A little pretentious and a harsh grader, but he gives very clear guidelines and feedback. I loved his class.

COMM A320 teaches students the basics of debate. Everyone in this class must actively participate. Steve may seem intimidating and to speak quickly. He supports his students but doesn't tolerate nonsense. You will get used to his speaking speed. The class is graded on an exam, a self-evaluation, two peer critiques, and three graded debates.

Johnson is a great teacher; he is a diabolical genius. The only issue I had was with attendance. I felt that the class was very, very easy (I would write all the speeches the night before and still get A's on all of them), therefore, I didn't feel the need to show up for the lectures. He definitely cares about attendance, though.

Professor Johnson is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about his course. Whereas you might think that public speaking/communication is something that can't be completely taught, Johnson proves the opposite. He lays out a phenomenally clear roadmap for success in his class, and the fields he teaches. Serious about grades though.

Although communication is my favorite area of interest and I figured I'd love debate, this class terrified me. I found him extremely intimidating (although yes, delicious) and he does take himself and debate very seriously. I'd only join if you're serious about debate. Grades harshly, be ready to put in the time to work on assignments.
