Dr Goates is one of the best professors I have had the privilege of having at BYU. This class was hard for me and has a lot of projects and homework to stay on top of. But although Dr Goates will make fun of you, trust me, it's a sign of endearment, and he is more than willing to help his students with anything so they can succeed.

I took this class way back in Spring 04. It was HARD. Prof. Goates made it bearable, but the thing he did that I'll never be able to thank him for enough: he told me I was in the wrong major. At first I was super offended, but when I really thought about it, I realized he was right. I finished the class but changed my major. Best. Professor. Ever.

Dr. Goates is very knowledgable and excited about chemistry, but his class feels unorganized and confusing. I learned more from the TAs than I did from him. You have to do labs and homework every week, which usually take less than an hour combined. Two tests, not too difficult if you go to the TA reviews and ask questions in class.

Comment:
Professor Goates understands how it can be tough to be a student. You get a free pass for a late assignment, no excuses needed. The homework is all relevant to making future lab work easier. He likes to tease a lot, although this can be a downside if you're shy, and make him intimidating to approach.

He really cares about his students. He's willing to spend ages looking over lab reports for a template error, or stay past his hours to help you understand an assignment. That said- this class is ridiculous in terms of homework. I heard it described as "computer science in disguise", and it is. Dr. Goates is grand, but 227 is a different story.

Dr. Goates was my favorite professor I've had so far in the chemistry program. He really cares about each of the students, and his lectures were good. The labs weren't too hard, and if you did your best you'd be fine. The programming assignments were the worst part, because we weren't taught how to do them at all, but besides that it was great.

The more he likes you, the harder he is on you, both in terms of jokes and grading. He's really reasonable and loves to help his students. He'll go over grades with you if you ask him. But his lectures are kinda confusing.

It was a really tough class, but he really cares about his students. He wants you to succeed, and if you talk to him, he loves helping students understand. The final's a doozy, so watch out! It's going to be a hard class; just bite the bullet and take it. It's definitely a weeder course. I promise, chemistry gets better.

Dr Goates is a great professor. He has a lot of material to cover so expect a lot of homework. Be prepared to spend at least six hours per week in the computer lab doing homework for the class.

Dr. Goates is in my top three professors I've taken classes from. He is very intelligent, willing to help, and provides so many resources you don't know what to do with them all. There was a lot of busywork, but that may have been the classes. He's a hard grader, especially if he knows you're intelligent but in the end you always get a fair grade.

Dr. Goates is what made me not hate this class. This class requires a lot of time to get a good grade, and throws things at you that you've never seen before like computational programming. Dr. Goates knows it's a hard class and does everything in his power to help you. He's awesome. Without Dr. Goates this class would be absolute torture.

Dr. Goates is such a great professor! He made this class a whole lot more enjoyable. The class itself is tough and requires a lot of time and studying, but Dr. Goates helps to lighten the heavy load. He gets to know each student personally and is always telling funny jokes in class. A good grade is possible with lots of studying.

Dr. Goates is an amazing professor! He cares about his students and is very willing to help one on one. The class is well structured and straightforward. Lectures can be dry due to the material but Dr. Goates always has some good comic strips and jokes. The class is extremly time consuming so be prepared.

I loved this class. Professor Goates is one of the best teacher's I've had. This is a really long class but the one I look forward to. He does a great job of making the class fun for everyone. I had a ton of fun in this class. He's really smart and helpful. If you put in the time it's not too hard to get a good grade in this class.

Make sure to prepare to spend a lot of time, but it is really manageable if you keep that in mind. Pro. Goates is the best and he is really smart. If you are making a strong effort to well he will help you a ton. He would come at 11 pm to help us in the chem comp lab. Fun, great guy. Hopefully you get a good lab group, b/c that can make a diff.
