I took his first-year class this year and when I say steer clear I mean it! My friends were mind-boggled by my workload. Many papers with harsh grading, quizzes, daily readings, etc. In addition, we had to print roughly 30 pages of readings a week excluding papers. The workload and content was way too much and difficult, especially for an FYSE!

Mr Bowers is very passionate about English. He's well spoken and quite gifted in his smarts. Although he is a caring and even kind figure, I HIGHLY don't recommend taking this 101 English class. His work given is extremely different than the other generic English 101 classes, by that I mean exceptionally harder. LOTS of essays and hw readings.

Professor Bowers is a wonderful man who is passionate about English. I took his ENG201 course and its not for everyone. The lectures were very scrambled but interesting if you could stay awake. I felt like most students werent prepared for the exams as well as he expected because he pushed further than needed, skimming over exam material.

Incredibly disorganized. His lectures follow no apparent structure and he goes on tangents all the time. He keeps lecturing after the end of class, and expects you to stay. Pop quizzes are tough, and hes a harsh grader. Not interesting, and for his exams he makes you memorize vocabulary and dates that he never mentioned in class. Awful.

Comment:
Professor Bowers is as dry as they come, and it doesn't help that the subject matter of the course is also fairly dry. Beware of pop quizzes and keeping up with the reading is important. You will have two essays throughout the semester, he is a harsh grader so be warned. Exams are impossible, I dropped my English minor following this class.

He actually genuinely cares about his students. I never got a condescending vibe from him. I think he's just really smart. One of the few classes I want to go to.

Professor Bowers is such a cool dude and I loved listening to him lecture. The only downside to this class is that he grades pretty harsh and really wants you to work your butt off for an A. Also you get points off of your participation grade every class you miss.

Bowers is very passionate about Brit Lit so definitely take him for Eng 201. You will need to get the textbooks because there is a lot of reading. For the quizzes, all of the questions can be answered from the summary on SparkNotes. He spends the whole class talking about the readings. He makes a lot of jokes and tries to keep everyone engaged.

His lectures are usually pretty dull, granted it's not the most exciting subject. His grading is tough, he will always find something wrong with your work. Only really accepts his own interpretations and his tone towards student is annoyingly condescending. I suggest you always get him to look over your paper drafts before turning in a final draft.

Comment:
The lectures are usually pretty dull, and Professor Bowers calls on people to read ridiculously long passages out loud that the whole class has already read. He grades exams based on criteria that he seems to make up as he goes along. Feels like your work is never good enough b/c he will always find something wrong w/ it. My least favorite class.

My favorite teacher this semester hands down. His class is a challenge, which I see as a good thing. He is incredibly smart and makes everything so clear. I expected to be so bored with this subject but it's the most engaging.

I thought this class sounded fun and easy for a first year but all you do is read novels and stories (a ton of them) and learn about philosophers and what they think a good life is. Its interesting but it is currently my hardest class.

if you don't write an essay or answer exam questions that's not about his opinions on a certain work, good luck trying to pass. also, he requires you to memorize dates of publication. and if you have a class ten minutes after his, you'll never be on time. he loves to talk.

I had him for both 201 and 202. He's the kind of professor where if you write about his opinions of the text and do it well, you will receive a good grade. Be warned if you have a contrasting literary analysis from his. He will meet with you and tell you exactly what you need to do for an A, so do it. He tests on dates of works which is annoying.

As a 200-level professor he's not the one to take for an easy grade. He's a merciless grader and is probably better for a more specific course. We didn't cover in depth very many of the texts required yet were tested on them. He's nice enough, but heaven help you if your papers aren't 50% quotations or if he catches you texting during class.

Worst ENG teach I've ever had. Rambles on unimportant literary topics & doesn't go over a good chunk of required material. Tests on title/author & PUBL. DATE!! 1st test- 48 works (incl 27 of Blake's SOI/SOE, most of which he didn't go over). VERY, VERY hard grader & if you don't agree with him, use SPECIFIC evidence to back it up. hatedthisclass

Dr. Bowers cares very much about his students! He gave so much feedback on each essay and kept in contact with me over breaks to help with any questions I had. He is quirky, easy going, and very knowledgeable about the subject. He is one of my favorite professors!

Dr. Bowers is a funny, skinny guy that has a dorky, but fun personality. He is a fantastic professor that keeps class interesting with discussions, however he expects a lots out of you. His grading is kind of difficult, but he leaves a lot of room for improvement. He's also very willing to meet with you if you need help!
