Comment:

Dr. Murphy is an okay professor. He has a very relaxed personality. He uses various websites to upload assignments and collect sources, but there are constant problems with them and he doesn't explain how to use them very well. He assigns essays and will give you tips/pointers along the way. He's the main reason I started reading again.

Mr. Murphy is a very understanding and easy going professor. My only complaint, his handwriting is hard to understand. I recomend him.

Comment:

He helped me become a better writer in one semester and I'd take him again. His classes tend to seem disjointed and fractured at times, but Dr. Murphy has method to his madness - just stick with him and eventually (hopefully!) you'll see what he's trying to teach you.

A good guy who tries to help you as best as he can. As much as I do enjoy nature writing and the environment I still felt as though my creativity was being somothered under a thick blanket of nature!

Dr. Murphy is a great teacher no matter what your major. He loves English literature & tries to get everyone involved with discussion. You will use your book everyday & be expected to read sometimes long and often challenging pieces but he always goes over them in class as well in group discussions that are at the end of each week. Def. take him!

I do not recommend taking Murphy for Comp. His teaching style is ridiculous. The class is based on writing short journal entries on articles from the NYT. He's picky with his grading. He writes all over your papers with illegible handwriting and never explains what you did wrong.

Had him my very first semester at Mansfield back in 1990, and he's one of the reasons why I became an English major my second semester. Today, I'm a college English professor myself. I really enjoyed his class.

Comment:

Lots of reading assignments, but he always goes over them to make sure they make sense. Lots of short writing assignments that he grades with checks and minuses.. Tests are fairly difficult but he's always willing to tell you how you can do better on tests and on essay writings. Great Teacher.

He's very political and environment-oriented. Very nice teacher, will listen to you, and will try everything to keep you on the right track. The articles get boring but he still makes the class interactive.

Do not take this class with him. He hates comp and it shows in his teaching. Doesn't really teach anything. Everything is based on commentaries from newspapers like NYT and it is all political. VERY hard to write papers for. The topics are so insane. I would not reccomend him for comp class

Dr Murphy is a must-take for English. He is very intelligent and easygoing, makes his classes very worthwhile and enjoyable. He really gets into the works and his enthusiasm is refreshing. One of the absolute best I've taken at Mansfield!!
