Comment:
His course in Roman History in '77 was Excellent. Textbooks:(Boak & Cary). Prof Griggs never took roll but on the last day cited the days we missed accurately. He required thoughtful interpretation of "The 'fall' of Rome". An Excellent Class I still recall vividly after 37 years. I highly recommend him. He taught me HOW to think rationally.

He cares about his students and will work with you to learn the material. He assigns a lot of reading but knows you will not be able to complete it all so do not stress about that. He prepares you well for the tests, and the lectures are super interesting. Totally recommended.

Class felt more like a book club (or at worst, a fan club) than a university course. Dr. Griggs talks way more about himself than the subject matter--all the important people he's met and places he's been, and how many scholars are impressed with his work, etc. Having said that, the course is a mindlessly easy A, and it's four credits. Recommended.

I worked hard in this class, did my reading and studied hard. The two exams were the only two grades in the class. There needs to be more grades than just exams. It was also hard to distinguish between off topic conversation and what was really needed to know for the class.

Dr. Griggs is brilliant, and gave some of the most interesting lectures I've ever attended. The class has a lot of reading, but it's manageable if you don't try to read everything. 2 tests, 4 papers (you can substitute a project for a paper with approval), plus the final group presentation. Interesting books and films, and helpful TAs.

Brother Griggs is the most knowledgeable man I have ever met. His lectures are very interesting, he's always willing to help, and he is very good at bringing the spirit into the classroom. He's funny, and doesn't assign any homework or projects for the class. That means there's only two grades--the tests. You really have to know your stuff.

An amazingly brilliant man. This class is really about thinking- analytical thinking skills and the ability to synthesize texts are far more important than the reading or lectures. However, most lectures were very interesting and worth attending. Essays are easy, tests are fairly easy too. Just think and you'll be fine.

This class definitely was not for me. I'm not a history person at all, and I dreaded going to class. Griggs had his moments, but I learned more from the TAs and movie labs. Not sure why this class gets so much hype, but if you're into history and Greek, this class is for you.

The smartest professor I had this semester. Knows his stuff, but wants individuals to form their own opinions. He is a giant among men, and has done a lot of things in his life. You'll have about thirteen books, but only read passages. You can use wikipedia for most stuff. Easy grader on tests and essays. There is a film lab on Fridays at 4

This class was a lot of work; tons of reading and lots of papers, but it was totally worth it. He's kind of a grammar nazi, but, overall, the class was great. It really gave me a good foundation in Western culture. Beware: We had Friday afternoon film labs.

This man is one of the best religion teachers ever. If you like Nibley style teaching and learning, this is the man to take it from. His tests are way hard, but lectures are amazing. This may sound cliche, but my testimony grew a ton from his insights into the background and his translations of the text. Amazing. Take it from him.

Griggs was one of my favorite professors at BYU. I think its fair to say that lectures are often tangential, but that wasn't a bad thing.Easy A, the tests were extremely easy (they are fairly seperate from the the overall flow of the class, mostly dates). There is a lot of reading, but you could probably silently skate by not doing it (your loss).

Dr. Griggs has had more impact on my life and testimony than any other person besides my parents. I am so grateful to have taken a couple of classes for him. Don't take this class if you are looking for something easy - take it because you want to learn. If you pay attention and study what he indicates, you will do fine.

He seems like a nice enough guy, but overall I didn't find the class very helpful. He wanders on personal stories and tangents a lot, which makes it extremely difficult to keep a good pace on the material. Also, there is no study guide for the readings, and no real way to study for the tests

Some people are in love with this guy. I'd have to say he's the most overrated professor at BYU that I'm aware of. If he's so smart, why can't he write a test that tests us on what is taught in the class? If religion were my life, then I'd have a lot of random facts in my head too. Don't believe the hype or be in awe of this guy. He's stuck up too.

He's very smug. He's more concerned with impressing people with his knowledge than actually helping you to learn. His tests don't include the material actually covered in the class either. He's not very approachable. I asked him why he included something on a test that I could not have possibly known the answer to, and he didn't like that.

Be prepared to study everything on your own. Griggs is super smart, and knows his stuff, but he doesn't teach what's on the tests. He picks and chooses and goes off on tagents (very interesting, but tangents all the same). If you are looking for an easy class, this isn't it

Civ was probably the biggest frustration of my first semester at BYU. There was too much reading, not enough meat to the lectures- he wanders a lot, the tests seemed disproportionally easy but hard at the same time, and he is difficult to follow. The class description for this class, Pen and the Sword, is nothing like the class at all either.
