I was gonna say that he is one of the best CS professors the department has to offer. Everything he talks about is useful in one way or another, and he challenged his students for their best interest. Were his tests impossible? Yes. Did he ever discuss homework assignments? No. But all the ideas and concepts he taught were amazing. We'll miss you.

Being one of the 3 weed-out classes, expect it to be tough. Write down everything he says but DON'T expect all the questions on the test to be the same as those proposed in class. There will be slight tricky deviations with some questions and others that have negative answers. Do your best, ask questions, and go to office hours. It's not that bad!

TIPS for A(-): Try to write EVERYTHING he says down. Study every lecture before the next as they build from one to the other, so don't fall behind! Use book as reference only, tests come from lectures. HW's are doable, get A's one all of them. Don't get disappointed with exam results, just try to be in 3rd quartile and you will be okay. Good luck!

What an amazing professor. Best lectures I've ever attended. Shame that they were at 8 in the morning. Write every word he says down and follow along in the book after class and this class is no problem. Only the second, third, and fourth project are tough, the remaining four are repeats/easy. The tests will cause you physical harm but he'll curve.

He is an awesome prof. I loved his explanation of the dining philosophers :). Very tough grader, tough test. Projects are difficult. But he explains things very well.

First this is the hardest class you will take, Datta is willing to come in early and review lecture material, don't be afraid to ask for help. It is important to take good notes and study almost every day. Test are no joke hard, do the best you can and it will show. projects are not super hard so get good grades on those.

Worst professor I've ever taken. The programming projects, and tests are incredibly difficult. Although it's hard to fail this class because of the curve, I hate not understanding the material and homework and losing hundreds of points left and right. Even if I'll pass it's depressing and stressful. He loves to play mental games with students.

Very tough class, but an amazing professor! Tests come directly from lecture, skip class you won't pass. To pass his test you must know the material, you cannot guess your way around it. Programming assignments teach you about important functions. Taking this class really showed me how to study and help improve my work ethic.

Great class with Dr. Datta! He presents complex material clearly and helps link concepts together. Take thorough notes on lectures and truly understand material to do well. All knowledge needed for exams is covered in class. Tests are daunting, study well! Coding projects are challenging and an awesome experience.

Fantastic teacher! Very challenging class, but also rewarding. Tests are on the material he provides in class, hence if you skip class, you won't pass. He's very passionate which makes the class very interesting. The final was insanely difficult and he warns you of that before hand. Cool projects, and cool concepts. Definitely take him again.

Genius. I initially gave a bad class review, and wish I hadn't. He taught me how to learn. By the time of the final, I realized just what I could pack into this brain. Never miss a lecture. Memorize EVERYTHING. Do ALL assignments to the fullest. Put your heart and soul into this class and you'll come out better. Most importantly - don't give up.

Do not take this class lightly. I strongly recommend asking permission to record the class as you will only absorb only 50% of the information during the lecture (it's information overload every lecture). Make sure you ask permission, he'll always say yes, but he gets mad if you don't. If you work hard and study this class should not be that bad.

Tough professor, and makes you work, but you learn a lot from his class (probably because you have to work and read a lot). I still remember and use almost everything I've learn in his class. Tough exams and quizzes. I would take his classes again, but with a lighter credit load.

Stressful class. I get that he grades tough and scares you to motivate you to do well but it creates a lot of unnecessary stress. The class caused me to be short with friends and family. There is a massive curve, like 30-40 points. Final Exam average was 41% with the highest grade being 77% (this gentleman needs to go out and get laid).

Invites students he feels are up for it to his graduate classes (I also took a CS789 with him). Insanely good prof, starts super hard then gets somewhat easier. His tests are *insane*. Graded strictly in addition to having negative questions (ex: answer is "it doesn't"), but the class IS CURVED! If you're struggling... step it up, kouhai!

Datta is a unique teacher, but it's easy if you know what to expect. Your grade will appear to be bad, but you should not give up. Do all projects and study for the tests. Expect trick questions. Expect to do poorly. Expect to learn from your mistakes. If you show that you're learning the material and keep above the average, you'll pass.

Datta has a unorthodox way of stimulate students to learn via psychological means but at the end is to help students prepare. His ways are mysterious ones like the LORD's ways but he did a good job at explaining concepts and the class was captivating. Its not that hard of a class. I found Ed's class to be harder thought.

He designs his tests in a way that it is impossible to score well. The wording of each question requires you have a singular perfect response, and thats assuming its not one of the many trick questions he likes to hide in his tests. You would be better off studying riddles than the content because it is your cleverness that will dictate your grade.
