Professor Kraut is an amazing professor. His lectures are enthralling and his insights are wonderful. He only has three grades, which was stressful, but they were not bad if you listened in lectures. There is A LOT of reading, but they are often really interesting and his lectures made up for them. I would love to take class with him again.

Very engaging and insightful professor. He is very helpful during office hours and is easily one of the best lecturers I have ever had. He has some great stories to tell and do not hesitate to go to office hours. Reading can be intensive so time management is key to doing well in his class.

Dr. Kraut is one of American's best professors. He is extremely knowledgeable on his areas of expertise but does a very good job and relaying the course material over to the students. He expects a lot but is also very accommodating.

Don't like this guy one bit. I didn't do well on the midterm is only one of 3 things we have chances to get graded on. I came to him in office hours to go over it it and he pretty much said its my fault and the F is the grade i deserve for not putting in the work... Thats not help.. or what office hours are for. I dont recommend this class.

Civil War and Reconstruction was an AMAZING class. He is so engaging and knows pretty much everything. I always left class feeling enlightened and never wanted to skip. 2 papers, midterm, and final but his grading isn't too hard. Bad side: too many books and articles but I got by with a B without reading hardly anything. TAKE IT!!

Take Civil War and Reconstruction with Kraut if you have any interest level in the time period! He's intelligent and very engaging. Also a pretty lenient grader.

Kraut's syllabus is stuck in 1958. 20+ books and documentaries to watch, and the books arent thin. He seems less concerned with the students doing well and more concerned with shoving vast amounts of knowledge down our throats. Not worth the effort, avoid the class. Avoid the professor.

I did not like this professor. I found him to be pompous and completely uninterested in the students actually doing well. He has a very high sense of self. I will say his lectures aren't too bad and he sets them up so they're easy to take notes to.

Great class. there were 11 books and 10 out of class movies assigned though. I read 1 and saw 5 movies and got a B. He is very smart and isn't shy when talking about his career. take good notes! there are only 3 assignments. Mid-term, final, and an ethnicity report about yourself.

Take this class! If you are a history minor/major or just have a free elective, take Civil war and reconstruction. Presentations were clear, there was a narrative, and the readings were well chosen. It is a lot of work, he does make it appear to be hard, but if you study on the tests and write a good paper, then you can get a good grade.

I hated history before this class, but he made it really interesting. The worst thing was all of the readings he made us do. We even had to read the book he wrote, but he talked enough about all the readings in class that you could get by without really reading. Really interesting lectures. learned

Anal about everything, ie being late, missing a class. A bit conceited and pompus, and comes off as a jerk. Once you get to know him, however, he can be a nice guy. His lectures are very interesting, and he's very knowledgeable.
