Comment:
This class was fun & easy. Stewart did a good job of presenting the material and the PowerPoint lectures are easy to follow (He uploaded them to BB which helped with studying, but this is the 1st semester he's done so). The quizzes and exams are easy if you just go over everything in the study guides. All my concerts I went to were free.

I was super excited to take Stewart's class in a topic that I'm really interested in. However, to my disappointment he was able to make a fascinating topic dreadfully boring. There's a low energy in the classroom and he fails to engage students. He sometimes interrupts while students are talking and does not lay out due dates or quizzes on syllabus

Great musician. Highly sub-par teacher. Too much reading and asks questions on exams that are absurd and should not be asked. Do not recommend taking his class.

Stewart is a very engaging professor. He relies heavily on class participation. Make sure to do the readings and listen to the sample music on BB -- they'll help you greatly on the quizzes. Quizzes will not take you more than 10 minutes if you study.

Alex is AMAZING. Take his Adv. Jazz theory and improvisation class if you're a music major (I'm jazz studies)!! He is a true inspiration as a musician, professor& person. I am beyond grateful that he is teaching us this course!! It's genius stuff and it's what the great cats did. He may be moody but because he cares if we get it& he believes in us.

Comment:
Alex Stewart is a passionate and creative guy who is a great musician and really knows his stuff when it comes to history and social issues. He's a bit erratic and isn't particularly a conceptual type of thinker- people who will enjoy his courses are those who already have an interest in the topic coming in and can learn with him, not from him.

Comment:
Alex brings to the table a perspective on the music industry that is insightful and worthwhile. His class was full of stories from his experience as a musicologist that gave a much more thorough look at the topics covered in the textbook. He also has a good sense of humor which helps make what would be a dry topic much more interesting.

Dr. Stewart is a nice guy, but he's SOOO disorganized. He didn't adhere to the syllabus, and I didn't understand how we were being graded. The class is easy if you're not a good test taker, because we only had one test the whole semester. It's interesting, but he likes to go off topic.

His expectations are ridiculous. He assigns very dense readings and quizzes you on material that isn't important. It does not seem like he cares much for his students or their workload. Articles and videos assigned for class are not easily located on black board. He texts when guest speakers are presenting in class.

Took this class as a D2 requirement and figured it'd be interesting. Unfortunately, what he asks for a beginning class is ridiculous. You must attend (and pay) for 3 concerts on Thursday/Friday nights. Also, he stated one of the exams were on the Friday before Thanksgiving break. You really have to work for your grade.

Lectures were dry at times sometimes hard to follow, but if you attend and take decent notes, quizzes (4) and midtermfinal should be okay. For a D2, I would say it is an easier class- an easy A for me at least.

He is a really nice guy, but is a boring lecturer. He is teaching a really fun topic, and does seem to be truly interested, though I think he would rather teach a class on forensic musicology. He had a lot of technology problems this semester, and that help to get the class behind. Also double check your grades he is not the best at math

Pretty interesting class. Lectures can be boring but sometimes the upper level classes will illustrate a kind of regional music which is always fun. If you need a D2 definitely take this class. 4 quizzes and a final-super easy. A fair amount of memorizing though.

Alex seems like the type of professor who seeks inspiration from his students. The more interesting the group of people in the classroom, the more interesting he becomes. He's definitely an introvert, but also well educated and has extensive experience with regard to Music. He's nice, sometimes critical, but he respects effort. He's avantegarde

He seems like a great guy to talk music with but is rather boring to listen to. He reads off of his laptop frequently, and I find myself zoning out often. Overall, a relatively easy course, though.

interesting topics covered, but it's a little dry...it's nice to have the slide shows, but he rambles on about them so it's easy to lose focus. if you study everything on the study guides provided you should do well on the tests.

I think his slide shows are provided by the teacher's addition of the textbook. Supposedly, he's a good jazz musician, but doesn't really show it. Class is boring, tests are challenging. Attendance is taken everyday.
