As long as you don't expect to pass on the bare minimum you should enjoy Dr. Emery. This class is a lot of work and reading, but the discussions were fun. He is very knowledgable and caring behind a rather stoic personality. Expect weekly quizzes and papers turned in through email. As long as you participate and try your best you'll be fine!

This class was so bad that I dropped it. He is low key super racist. If you're a person of color, get ready to be called out during class. He doesn't use canvas... who does that? He assigns literally 20 pages of reading a night. I spent ALL of my time doing homework for his class. I would definitely recommend literally ANY other professor over him.

Only thing that bugged me about this class was that there is no canvas page (which means you don't find out your grade until the end). You won't get feedback/ grade on time. There are daily readings & online quizzes (you email your replies) that are kind of annoying but only a few papers. You will end up with a B unless you don't participate at all

I found out that I wouldn't be able to take him for HNRS 2020, and it crushed me. Basically you read what you're supposed to read and come to class to talk about it, and every discussion was fascinating since we covered polarizing topics and would analyze the strength of the argument and our own take on the issue. And he's a really cool guy!

In Dr. Emery's class you won't get feedback and you won't know your grade until they are posted at the end of the semester but his great ideas course was great. I enjoyed the variety of reading and that made it fun to write all the papers for this course. He tries to give as many A's as possible and cares for his students. I learned a lot.

Very slow grader but gives good feedback on essays. Participate in class a lot, he likes to hear your opinions. He really wants to give out as many A's as possible. Do the readings and "reading quizzes". Best advice, do not procrastinate on the essays! His 2010 class is set up more like an intro philosophy course. I really enjoyed this class

Dr. Emery is my all time favorite professor. He is so passionate about what he is teaching and really knows his stuff. Yes, he is a slow grader and doesn't use canvas but his classes are so interesting. Honestly as long as you go to class, take notes, and stay involved, you'll get a good grade. He is the best prof I've ever had.

Being in Dr. Emery's class has kind of been a hellscape for me. Since it was in a large lecture format, I understand and that's acceptable for not feeling involved in the class. However, finals are in a week and 1 out of my five papers have been graded... Plus the test had a LOT of studying included.

This was the WORST class I have taken and sadly it because of the professor. I have taken literature classes in the pass and they were amazing but this one was horrible. Prof. Emery is not only racist, sexism and closed minded but also boring as hell. I hate going to class but knew I had to. He also took 2 month to get me my first 2 page paper.

Allan is such a cool guy and really cares about what he's talking about. If you aren't one to participate like me, he WILL call you out in class so make sure you throw in a comment or two here or there so you're not taken by surprise. The reading material is boring but he makes it somewhat enjoyable and always throws in some good personal stories.

Dr. Allan Emery is a profound intellectual, but because of his knowledge, he expects you to have this same intelligence as well. The class is loaded with reading assignments, all of them being fairly lengthy, and a comprehension quiz due before each class. Emery grades extremely slow, so if you need grades quick do not take him. Avoid if possible

Allan Emery is a very knowledgable man, but this class is beyond difficult. There is copious amounts of homework for EVERY SINGLE CLASS. The readings are long and hard to comprehend because you have to answer impossible essay questions before discussing them in class. DO NOT TAKE.

He is very kind, and he knows what he's talking about, just not how to impart that knowledge onto others. We can't say he shows bias on here, but if you're a guy, prepare to have an easy A.

Dr. Emery will give you a lot of work, so be careful. However, he gives good feedback for your writing and while he can be slow to grade, he's tough but fair.

I would not recommend this class! Lots of reading and an insanely confusing grading system. Unsure whether I was at top of the class, or barely passing(even after asking)! Often assigned homework at 8/9pm the night before class. Also took forever to grade, got a grade back on maybe half of my papers. Good enough in class, but not worth the headache.

This class was A LOT OF READING. You read, he sends out a quiz on the lengthy reading, you discuss the reading in class the next day, and then you write infrequent papers on the reading. Very well structured. Allan really knows what he's talking about. One of the most intelligent profs at BG by far. I'd trust this man with my life.

He is really slow getting your papers back and he doesn't use Canvas so you need to keep track of your own grade. The paper at the end he says is optional, but if you are between two grades, do it.

This class the topic can vary but this one was Early American Horror. We studied Charles Brockden Brown& Edgar Allan Poe. Most of the grades were papers & our final exam. There is an attendance policy but he will work with you if there's special circumstances. I didn't like it took a while to find out grades but I had a good time in the class
