I had zero Biology background, and I got an A in this class. Annette's genuine passion for marine biology is inspiring and motivating, and her lectures captivating. Maybe I'm just a nature nerd, but I loved this class. Her focus on our local marine environment, and history on our coastal First Nations is crucial knowledge for anyone living here.

Interesting lectures and field trips, however when it comes to test it's not an intro course when taught by her. The quiz's and homework did not correlate to exams. The exams were much harder and her grading system did not make sense.

I was really looking forward to taking Marine Biology with Annette because that is the career path I have chosen. After the brutal semester with her I have changed my path, she was not helpful at all, lectures were good but the labs were boring. She is a good person but NOT a good teacher.

Comment:
Annette is incredibly inconsistent with her marking. She is excessively picky about format and specificity, yet for some things she is far too lenient. Her tests are poorly written, with ambiguous questions. I wish she used extra class time to have a time to have a revision lecture instead of being lazy and showing videos (on VHS) to the class.

Comment:
Take lots of notes in labs as lab exams are very specific. If you show up and read her lecture notes you will do well. She encourages you to add more social and empathetic thinking into sciences. She breaks down all the words to the latin meanings which has helped me remember and actually understand definitions instead of just memorizing.

Comment:
Class average was poor, with no study guide. Our class bombed the first lab exam and got a half hour lecture on how it was "our fault we didn't study properly." She is knowledgeable and interesting; however, she greatly needs to rethink her teaching style. She is very picky and shows attitude with some students, if you can teach yourself go for it.

She is very passionate about her job and marine life. It's inspiring to me. Though, her teaching methods need to change. You have to teach yourself in her class. No study guides when they're clearly needed, not enough clarity on what to study. "The notes are the skeleton." What? I'm doing well, but could be (AM) teaching this to myself.

Lacking formal pre-established criteria for grading, pretests or assignments to prepare for exams, & she lectured directly from slides provided online. A wonderful person, but a teacher needing guidance on coaching actual learning from large groups. Best for strong independent learners otherwise you may struggle.

Lectures are interesting, but exams are much harder than necessary. Test q's ask for very specific answers to an extremely broad range of topics, meaning you must be able to remember specifics about EVERYTHING in each chapter. Her lectures do not nearly cover everything that you are tested on, so dont rely on her powerpoints. Class avg not good.

Ddn't like her teaching method at all. Her labs are totally unorganized to the point where she's too busy helping individuals during lab time to get around to everyone who has questions. Her exams are far too broad, and her exam outlines are non-existant. I managed a good mark, but it wasn't worth the stress.

I thought she was a pretty good prof in bio124, but she's even better in vertebrate diversity (envr242). If you take an interest in the material, and study hard for tests, then there is no reason why you cannot do well in this class.

laughed at my questions (more than one time) or deflected and said 'its in the notes'- never was just helpful. Also was confrontational regarding her stapler. wtf? NOT kind, interesting or coherent. Don't waste your time/money- I had a good mark, but it wasn't worth it. Its a memorization course, not learning. terrible teacher! terrible!!!!

The class itself is not difficult if you put in a bit of studying time and don't ditch the labs early. Annette can be a bit rude and condescending at times, but she clearly has a love for the environment and is well suited to studying ecology. Unfortunately she is not very well suited to teaching at the college level.
