Comment:
He only gives a couple of essays throughout the semester and grades relatively easily, as long as you portray that you know the material and provide your own insight about the topic, don't just list what he already knows. He is more lenient to those who participate/pay attention in class. I would recommend him.

I hated Philosophy, but Dr. Martine was a good professor. The grade I received was fair. He expects his students to have read the assigned work. You have been warned.

Attendance is not mandatory, but if you do not go you will not understand the material or the concepts he wants you to do your essays on. He's not clear on how he grades. If you can't understand the books, read them on sparknotes and it makes it easier to understand. He's funny and I recommend him.

One of the best professors at UAH. He really seeks to foster a love for the subject and as long as you put in effort, he will help you in any way he can. Read the material, pay attention (he does have a somewhat monotonous voice, so can seem boring, but if you pay attention, he's great), and don't get behind.

Took Martine for Ethics and LOVED the class. I had no interested in philosophy before the class, and now I love it. He's a really nice guy and I loved listening to his lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory, but go to class, you'll get so much more out of it if you do.

I was in the honors section of this class. Some of the papers were difficult, and the grading a little unclear. Overall, Martine is a good teacher. He knows the material and explains it well.

I signed up for a Philosophy class ouf of boredom. Martine made it so interesting I took 4 or 5 classes with him. The experience changed my life for sure and we became friends. This was in 1978.

Dr. Martine is brilliant, helpful, and friendly. I learned more from this class than any other. He truly teaches you how to use your mind, but at the same time lets you develop your own opinions without bias.

This man is just brilliant. He is somewhat difficult, but with a purpose: he teaches philosophy, which is designed to make one think. If you're taking a PHL course to satisfy an elective, by all means, take someone else. However, if you're truly interested in philosophy, there's not a more amazing professor you can find than Dr. Martine.

Brilliant teacher who will bend over backwards to make you understand the material. If you immerse yourself in the class discussions, it will make the class a whole lot easier. Also, for the essays, he loves long, well-thought-out, theoretical examples to back up your points. Good luck.

He is a great professor, but I wouldn't recommend taking more than two classes with him because he tends to cover the same ground over and over again. I wish I hadn't registered for another class, despite his smarts.
