Comment:
Prof Conklin goes by Mulford. She's an older lady with solid viewpoints. She is very interested in the novels you will read, which is good, but doesn't make the novels much more interesting. It is what it is. Fair/easy grader, 3 papers and 10 question T/F quiz after every novel is over (usually for plot, sometimes can be tricky). Helpful professor.

Carla is a gret professor. A little boring at times, but it's not hard to pass her class. She's older and a bit old-fashioned, so no electronics are allowed and she values attendance highly. If you participate in discussions and put in effort on the papers you'll be fine.

Mostly class discussions, not a lot of lectures or informative segments. Book choice is not very good. Option was given to only do 2 essays the entire semester, so grading is smooth. Attendance will get you though.

Expected it to be awful from reading a review on here, but it wasn't bad. A lot of reading! About 8 novels. I didn't even read half of them and I barely participated. Got a B, but if you're not a solid writer, participation could make or break you. Don't be fooled by the title, this is Native Am. Lit class, but the material was really interesting!

She goes by Mulford not Conklin. Anyway, good class with interesting novel choices. Lectures are boring at times but she's helpful with papers. FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES she gives you on the papers to the letter and you will do fine. She wants it totally in her format and style. Final is not as bad as she makes it sound, don't freak out. Good 400 level

THIS IS A HISTORY COURSE! It's "English" 404 but it's all historical texts and books. If you're not good on history or postcolonial theory, prepare to feel stupid during class. Two papers are ok though because you can choose a topic yourself so you understand it better. Really dry most days and always takes attendance. Try something else if you can

Carla is a great professor. Though class can be dry at times, it is obvious that she thoroughly enjoys teaching and early American lit. Grades fairly easily (compared to many other Engl. profs.), but need to put in the effort and do the reading. Class part. is 20% of final grade, but it is easy to acheive 100%. Only 3 4-page papers and a final.

Comment:
The readings are difficult, because these are early novels. The Federalist Papers are hard, too, because it's such a different time. But this is a must-take course if you want to understand the craziness today. It's historical.

Really great teacher who is very knowledgeable and able to answer questions.Really enjoys teaching and it shows.Grades you fairly: if you put in effort you can get an A, if you don't, don't expect an A.she's all about making sure you learn and doesn't mind if you talk with other students about exams

Thoughtful, insightful, helpful. AMST 402 is good if you are interested in early American novels. We read them- they are hard to get used to, but good when you get going. She's great for the first class of the day.
