Terrible, Terrible, Terrible. If you do not have a similar opinion as her, she will change your grade. Also she changed my final grade at the end so that I could not receive a better grade.

Very caring lady but talks a lot. She isn't bad for a 101 teacher. Grades very slow (didn't give back my essay for almost two months) Not terrible but not the best

Where do I even start? She talks the ENTIRE time you are in class just to talk. There is pretty much a quiz every time you go to class so if you skip, you get an automatic 0 on the quiz. She doesn't grade heavily on papers, but if you don't have the same ideas as her she will take points off of your final grade. To conclude, 0/10 I DO NOT RECOMMEND

She's a bit animated. Had a problem with her when she gave our group presentation a C because we didn't use what she wanted us to use. In our defense, our topic was very baseline. She talks a lot and sometimes she tends to go off subject but the class is pretty simple. Our topic was the Vietnam War and we watched movies.

Be prepared to spend more time on this class than any other you will take at UAB. Expects students to read a different story every week. 3 discussion post weekly and must reply to 2 fellow students on each. If you analysis isn't along the lines of what she gathered from the literature you are obviously wrong since there is only "one right answer" .

There were a lot of discussions in the online class- way too many compared to the other 4 online classes that I've taken. The class assignment weights could be scaled better (I made a 74 on the first quiz and was stuck in the 70s as a final grade for a long time).

Comment:
She docked points from my final because my analysis of a certain story looked different from what her analysis was. We had a whole discussion post about perception, but she grades as if the only perception of literature that matters is her own. Am I not allowed to express sentiments that oppose those of the professor? Guess not.

I took her EH102 online and I can say it was by far one of the worse academic decisions of my life. Her grading is not clear, and she makes up random things to put on her test. Good luck on understanding what she expects on your paper. Last thing, she doesn't check her emails on the weekends or after hours so be prepared to be inconvenienced.

Some of the things she taught sounded made up, I would try to google it for a better understanding but never found anything. She also thinks there's one right answer in analyzing literature which I don't agree with. She is a tough grader because she has a strict idea of what is right in the analysis of a work and it's not fair in my opinion.

Pretty tough grader. Thought I was decent* at writing papers but she wrecked me on the first 2. I had honors 101 so we did service learning, but it honestly made the class easier. I made it out of there with a 90.04% when I had a high A in my other hard science classes. So yeah, she was tough. Shes the reason Im taking 102 at community college.

Overall Professor Ellis is a great professor. She does take forever to get paper back to you. She does grade pretty hard. There was a lot of problems with the online portion like wrong modules were open, and discussion were not open. The test get harder as the class go on.

We were meant to be studying African American literature with an emphasis on mental, physical, and cultural prisons. She didn't stay to this topic though. She constantly asked for student opinions and laughed if they weren't correct. She didn't really grade things or give us feedback on anything for weeks after the assignment was turned in.

I thought my AP Lang class in HS would have prepared me for this. However, I was wrong. In HS, we learned about grammar and how to actually analyze what we were writing about. In Dr. Ellis's class, the lessons were confusing, and I often did not know what we were supposed to be learning. I was often frustrated with her teaching style as well.

Great online class if you are trying to satisfy the University Core. There are lots of online discussions but if you read you should be fine. The test are very doable if you read as well. Overall good class.

Ellis' personality is great. I loved her. As for the class, expect a lot of online discussions that are very in depth. Usually the topics are not very clear. The hardest part of the class is the essay's, it's hard to know exactly what she wants, but she is helpful if you ask for help. Clarity is really the only problem here, great teacher.

Going to class is basically pointless. We did nothing important, except discuss what each paper needed to include. She is a very tough grader, and the grades for the papers are HEAVILY weighed. We only had three papers. I thought that the course was kind of harsh for an english 101 class, even if it was honors.

Tough teacher! You will love her lectures, but her grading is not always clear cut. Really make an effort to understand what she wants from you as a writer, and you will love the class. Go see her in office hours, it is incredibly helpful.

Dr. Ellis is a good professor. She is enthusiastic, which is key because the course material is not that interesting. She can take a while to grade things. If you have a great attendance record and have done the offered extra credit, she will bump anything ending in a 9 ( 89, 79, 69......) up. Make sure to read the short storiespoems before class.
