Larson was probably the meanest, and least helpful professor I've have at AU. He criticized my writing to such an extent, that I decided not to major in literature. I went to him for help, but all he did was mock me for a few minor grammatical errors in my papers. I was also planning on going abroad to Africa, but not after this class.

Comment:
Professor Larson is very charismatic. I enjoyed his antics and his great ability to lecture. I wish he would have given me the A that I deserved, because I worked my butt off and knew my stuff. He is on the unfair side when it comes to grading. He is demanding, which I do not mind. I would like to take another course with him pass/fail, not A-F.

Comment:
Larson is ridiculous. Seriously, I studied like crazy for the exam, studied my notes extremely carefully, looked back over all the reading, studied for weeks beforehand and got a C. He focuses on a point in class a lot and then its nowhere on the exam, but claims that his exams aren't obscure.

I came in here with a lot of enthusiasm & was immediately crushed. I did all the work, & went to office hours, but it didn't help. If bad grades don't bother you, then take this class. Otherwise, this class caused so much stress in my life. The class is very interesting and Larson is a good lecturer. But the class is too big & he grades harshly

Larson taught me so much about African literature. I am amazed by his passion and intelligence, even if he is super opinionated (crazy liberal). He is a tough grader and you MUST read the material. He's also pretty funny, too.

Hard work does not translate into good grades. The great literature the course is filled with is not worth the anxiety and insanity that surrounds his grading system.

He is one of my favourite professors! I love Larson to death. So he's a hard grader, he is a stickler for grammar, he expects you to do your readings...that's what most professors should be. He's phenomenal. I'd take another class with him any day

Larson is a great and passionate asset to the Lit. Dept. Cute old man who taught in Africa and has great stories. I'm not a lit major, nor was I interested in African writing, but really enjoyed this class. Read as much as you can, go to him for help and take NOTES! it's all the tests are. He's specific about grammer because it's a LITERATURE class

DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! I'm an African Studies major, and LOVED the readings, but love of the topic and hard work does not translate to a good grade. He insults the readings by not allowing analysis, but then expects graduate work for his papers. Just read the books on your own time. Seriously, what's YOUR ordeal, Chucky?

Larson is one of my favorite teachers. He is a hard grader, but he loves it when students go to his office hours, and he will edit your paper for you! I had a C paper, went to talk to him about it and got it changed to an A. Tests are easy, the only reading you need to do are the quotes he tells you about in class, so go to class/ take this class

This professor is one of the hardest graders, as others have said, that I've ever encountered. He seems to be a nice person, perhaps even easy going; however, he is a stickler for good grammar. Even if the paper is on topic, he will substantially lower your grade if the grammar is not perfect.

Ridiculously hard grader, way too much reading even for a lit course, and not helpful. Politics sometimes detracts from the lesson. Avoid this class if you care about your grade and/or have a life.

If you're a fast reader, the reading is no problem. The extremely boring lectures are though (which you must attend) and his impossible grading is also. As a senior who took APs in high school, I found the grading to be ridiculous. Skip the class unless you are REALLY interested in the topic.

He's a relatively nice guy, but he grades papers nearly impossibly. It's tough to get an A, especially if you don't have time to read 80 books in three months.

If you are a conservative, don't take his class. Otherwise, he's not too bad. But there is a LOT of reading , and he is not an easy paper-grader.

as others have mentioned, larson often goes off on unnecessary political tirades that have nothing to do with class. he's a nice person, though just way too overbearing with the politics to even teach this course properly. the class size is WAY to big (50 people for a lit class?) so that no real learning can be done. insane amount of reading.

Good prof. This is bad if you're not interested in literature or doing the reading, you'll going to hate the class. He is an unforgiving grader, even if he likes your ideas he will slam you on editing. Other quirks are his very Freudian interpretations and anti-Imperialist views, but it's Third World Lit deal with it, he's teaching the books.
