Don't buy the text book you won't use it! All the papers are based on the source book. The papers are difficult to write because he gives non specific topics and expects you to think like he does. he is not connected to any online communication or online grades. He is lecture heavy and very monotone.

I don't get why he gets the kind of reviews he gets. He is so adorable and makes little jokes all the time that seem to be missed by most students. All exams are take home... so they're easy to ace... not seeing how they're graded harshly either. Literally all you have to do is give YOUR interpretation. Only used the source book.

He assigned a lot of reading that I didn't really do. Your grade is based of 4 essays that are graded pretty harshly.

Steen's lectures were abstract and tough to follow. I have taken quite a few history professors at UNM now and Steen was definitely the hardest for me to listen to. He was very vague about expectations and seemed to expect the students to be experts on the subject of the French Revolution. Do yourself a favor and don't take HIS309, waste of time.

Easy class to take but the grading is stupid hard. Class is graded as a 300 level class not a 101. Also difficult to understand what him and his TA's want out of the papers.

Grades are based on 4-5 total assignments. Assignments dont have a timeline. Extremely tough grader with little opportunities to excel and actually learn. Overall a tough, boring class. Seems like this class isnt designed for an online setting. Everything was book dependent and not web welcoming.

Attendance was not mandatory. Had three total essays and a few one page discussion papers. He insists we buy both the textbook & sourcebook but ONLY BUY THE SOURCEBOOK. Trust me. His lectures are all based on the textbook, and most essays and all small papers on the sourcebook.

There was no specific rubric, so any exams given were graded variably and without proper parameters. Don't follow the word count in this class, follow the PAGE count. Learned that the hard way.

Professor Steen is really nice and explains the material really well, however you must read the book to fully understand it. He doesnt give any quizzes, everything is based on essays he also allows extra credit all in all I would take Steen again.

Not very specific when it comes to grading, graded on two tests and a research paper. Not interesting no matter how hard I tried to stay focused. Had to try way too hard for a C in this class. Not worth it in the slightest. Should utilize technology more often, didn't even list his email on the syllabus. Dry manner of speaking. Class too broad.

Well the class is a lecture-based class, he lectures in a way that keeps his students involved and listening. He was always a fair grader and was always will to help! He is one of the best professors that I have had in my almost 5 years at UNM.

Steen is a pretty great teacher. The readings arent reinforced with assignments, the course is only based off 4 papers (2 long, 2 short). He offered two extra credit papers. Hes a huge fan of course messages and will blow your notifications up haha. Over all helpful professor. Easy class.

Extremely relaxed with due dates. Albeit his lectures are difficult to follow at times, the material is comprehensible. If you do not like lecture classes do not take this one. He retells the history as a narrative in the class, putting the students in the position of the historical figures. Not a harsh grader either, he realizes students are busy.

If you want to learn about the French Revolution, this is not the class for you. However, if you want to learn the philosophy behind it, it's perfect. Not a regular history class - no facts, only theory. If you like to read long, boring papers published hundreds of years ago, this class is great. Lectures don't make much sense. Papers really vague.

Yeah French Revolution and Napoleon has a great course title but this was actually a terrible class. The only grades were a midterm paper and a final paper. Not very hard, but a total waste of time. Charlie Steen's lectures are really dull. Hard to follow with the weak attempts at jokes. Went to class about 6 times, got a B.

He told me he didn't like my writing style so I took the B+ I got in one class and never took another from him. His GA's do around 90% of his grading and the are even harder than him. I have heard he is great, but not for me!
