Comment:

She is not as bad as people make her out to be. She genuinely does care about her students and is a very nice lady. That being said, there is some truth to the negativity. She can be very subjective about her grading between classes and students. Her instructions can also be very hard to follow! If you take her, constantly check D2L, and PRACTICE!!

Absolutely despise. This professor taught my theory 1 class and it was rough to say the least. Her "notes" (scribbles on the board) were unorganized as well information given. Anything learned in that class was due to my own doing. Also, keep record of every assignment, every absence, and every due date- Because she has screwed several.

Had her for skills 3 and 4. When she decides she doesn't like you, good luck redeeming yourself. Was always late and not great at teaching but expects you to do everything perfectly. Unfortunately unavoidable and frequently unreachable for assistance. 10/10 would avoid if possible.

Dr. Clewell is a wonderful professor for applied lessons in organ. She gives you tools grow in and outside of lessons with her, she will bend over backwards for her studio, and she genuinely cares about students' well-being. She knows everything there is to know about being a liturgical organist and church music director.

Accused me of not being able to read music. I am a sophomore music major. In skills 3... I know how to read music. Does not answer emails. Told me she needed to reschedule my sightsinging, I emailed her three times over two weeks attempting to reschedule, but no reply. Also, plays dictations differently every single time. She is unavoidable.

Comment:

Dr. Clewell really does mean well. The problem is, she's NOT first and foremost a teacher. She's an organist. Her classes are drawn out and chaotic, and her students regularly feel lost. This is my third class with her only out of necessity. If you can avoid her, by all means do so. You may actually learning something in one of those classes.

Talented organist, but not an accomplished teacher. She is expert at making students feel inferior, has no clear grading criteria, and presents material in a disorganized manner. I have never struggled through a class quite like this one. While she is a nice woman, her harsh teaching style and lack of organization leaves something to be desired.

I heard some not very good things about Dr. Clewell before going into Class Piano I with her. She says some odd things in class every once in awhile, but overall I think I've improved as a pianist in her class. She's definitely hard and expects a lot from us, but if you practice and go to class you'll be fine.

She is an extremely difficult teacher, mostly if you don't play piano well. Yes she does play favs. (get over it) But that being said, she doesn't try to fail you, if you need help with something, she will make time. But she doesnt put up with bull. So if youre not lazy,and you actually practice, YOU WILL DO OK. I had her for 4 classes and lived.

Going into the class I was a little bit nervous about taking her based on this site and what everyone else had said, however, after going through a semester with her I realized that she is actually a really good professor and I learned a lot from her. She doesn't put up with **** and expects you to get your work done. I recommend taking her.

I did not have her for early theory and skills and I heard that she is alright for those classes, but in Theory IV, she is EVIL! She will develop an opinion about you from day one and not change that opinion. She disliked me, and made me take the final even though I was exempt, which in turn lowered my grade. Sadly, you have to take her. :(

SKILLS CLASSES: Basically, if you make life hard for her, she'll make it hard for you. She has punctuality issues all around, but the work you do in class is beneficial and she tries her best to make it fun. Just keep track of your grades... she's a little disorganized sometimes.

kind-hearted woman who really does care about her student's success. yes, she plays favorites. i think she has some excellent ideas on how to teach skills classes, she just has problems executing them. kinda unorganized. if u respect her, she will respect you.

very nice lady. if u like her and respect her, she will like and respect you. however, she is sometimes late to class..she has off campus lessons beforehand. i think she maybe too strict for class piano I..it's obvious that we aren't very talented. shes very repetetive and can be annoying. i guess shes a good teacher..its hard to make scales fun.
