He has great knowledge about the industry, and I would say that he is probably one of the most respectable professors at LAVC IMO. His lecture styles don't appeal to me but he's there to help you. He treats you like an adult and is very understanding and caring . He's funny, laid back, and his class is worth taking. You won't be wasting your time!

Comment:

Easy A if you read the book and do the homework. Love hearing Dan's first hand stories in the industry. This class will get you writing your screenplay. He doesn't take attendance besides the first class, so as long as you turn in your papers in class you are good to go.

Comment:

The professor really doesn't teach anything and brings in "industry experts" who worked on stuff a hundred years ago or are cinema students who never left Valley. Why can't we have some one current who actually is working in the industry now?! This class is an easy A but a waste of time.

We did virtually no broadcast writing in this class and focused entirely on writing the first 25 pages of a screenplay. I thought it was a good class till I got to Advanced Screenwriting and realized there are alot of format and fundamentals in writing that this professor does not teach. I didn't feel I learned anything about broadcasting either.

He's very knowledgable and will shower the class with many stories but all the stories apply to what you are learning if you are paying attention. He brings lots of industry people in to give a well rounded explanation and look into the jobs of industry professionals and technical aspects that you learn in class. Fantastic teacher.

Professor Watanabe is an amazing man and educator. He is extremely knowledgeable and brings in good people to work with us as we made our first films. He is positive, funny, supportive and encouraging. I wish I could take him for all my classes...

Was a great professor. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable, but he is very relaxed about his assignments. One of the last assignments in this class is a 25 page script. It sounds incredibly intimidating, but he walks you through the entire semester so when you start, it's not as bad as you initially thought it would be. Highly recommended.

Overall a really good professor to work with. He will respond to your questions in a blast! Helpful and tells you what he expects on the spot. Take notes, pay attention and practice the course at least 10 minutes a day, and you'll do great!

Watanabe is an incredibly nice man who expects his students to lead their own educational learning curve. With that said if you are not a self motivator, and need a week to week syllabus, I would avoid taking his class. Otherwise be ready to participate in every class discussion and you will have no problem passing with an awesome grade.

Easy class. Show up, listen to lecture, watch movies, do summaries of class, do a couple of take home tests and write a short paper and you are set! Nice guy. Recommended if you want an easy A!

Super smart guy, knows his way around the industry, lots of helpful insight, movie wiz, knows everything there is to know about movies, strong opinions. He is not approachable as a teacher though. It seems as if he runs away from students who need to ask questions or help.

EXTREMELY EASY CLASS!!! Dan is really awesome. He lectures for the first half of the class (about whatever he wants), and you don't have to take notes - he even says so! The second half of the class you watch a movie and every week you just have to give a quick summary (you can B.S. it and you'll be fine). Take-home tests, easy research paper.

He is great. If you going to be a screenwriter you must take broadcast 25 with Watanabe and MA 130 with Swelstad. Watanabe explains you how the business works from a developer's stand point and Swelstad from writer's.

Dan means well and is a great teacher. He's a very smart man with much much knowledge. However, I've noticed that he runs from his students, in a sense. He's a little unapproachable & if you come with a question at the end of class he answers you with his back to you as he's leaving. It's almost as if he's trying to cut you off.

Watanabe is a great professor. I took Broadcasting 25 in the spring of 2012. He is knowledgeable about the entertainment business, especially filming. He has a way of making he subject interesting, and you'll pay attention. I highly recommend him.
