Prof Commins makes a very confusing topic interesting and adds a lot of personal stories about the Middle East during his lectures. A great person to talk to outside class. I like his selections for readings - most of the times they are pretty short but valuable to learning.

Comment:

Great teacher, really knows what he is talking about. Teaches very differently then what you would expect in a history class - he wants you to understand why things happened, instead of just what. Overall, he is a very nice guy and would absolutely recommend his classes.

Prof is great at teaching about the Middle East. Lectures A LOT, but is always willing to answer questions. Great advisor and willing to talk outside of class. Grading is stringent, but you learn what he wants in a paper. Overall a good prof, and fairly easy on the eyes ;)

Prof. Commins is an excellent professor with tremendous insight into his subject. Prefers to lecture, but is always open to questions. Can be a bit of a tough grader at first, but you learn what he likes to see in papers. Surprisingly good sense of humor for someone whose research interests are a bit dull to most.

I loved Prof. Commins! Sometimes his lectures could get boring, but towards the end this seminar got really interesting. And, although he was a tough grader, he really taught me a lot about writing. He was always willing to help out. He's so sweet. Plus he's incredibly open to feedback and advice.

Great course, great teacher. Mostly lecturing, which could get boring occasionally, but you do learn a lot and that's what we're here for. Considering the nature of his topic, it was also very admirable/interesting that he presented a relatively non-aligned viewpoint most of the time. I'd definitely recommend both the course and the professor.
