Hardest class I have ever taken. I struggled with readings at the beginning of semester, but recommend you read and Sparknote/Shmoop at same time. The syllabus does not say participation matters, but it does. Show up to class. Voice your opinion, but conform to the opinion of the professor. He is the one grading. Grade received is the effort put in

If you take a class taught by Dr. Fott, you will absorb a lot of information regarding political theory; his lectures are digestable . That being said he expects well versed answers on essays and takes grammar into account. This specific class had the following assignments: 2 tests, 2 essays, and participation as a form of "extra credit".

This is a challenging class with a substantial amount of reading centuries old texts, but his explanations are clear and concise. It is absolutely imperative to attend every class session and take copious notes. The reading isn't as important as attendance and note taking. He requires two papers, a midterm, and a final, also offers extra credit.

Fott was tough. Very big on grammar in essays. Read everything or you'll get lost. He is not good at explaining the topic and does not break it down for a student to understand. Show up everyday!

Dr. Fott's class was the most challenging course I have taken, yet I learned more about contemporary political thought, its origins, and its impact on our current political situation than I ever imagined. The class was tough, but there were students in the class whose vapid complaints showed that this classmajor probably wasn't for them.

This professor is the worst I encountered at UNLV. He should retire based on the fact that he is getting so old that everything he says does not come out clear. He comes frequently late to class but penalizes students for being late and marks down attendance for being on electronic devices. Taking this class made me feel like I was in the stone age

Professor Fott goes above and beyond so his students understand his course. He is open to emails to count as participation as well as visiting office hours. I received two A- on essays as well as a B on the midterm. If you read you will enjoy his class. He is clear, polite, and does not make students feel stupid, like some other teachers do.

Professor Fott is very knowledgeable and passionate about the things he teaches. A lot of people didn't like him, but I think that is largely due to laziness or a lack of interest in the subject. The course was challenging in a way that makes sure you actually understand the material. I highly recommend taking him if possible.

By far it is my least favorite course this semester. The lectures are dry and he isn't much better. I find it hard to stay awake during this class. He is quite rude and has had several snark remarks about phones going off(even when it's an accident). Not a fan all, but the class is required. If possible take another professor.

Class discussions were interesting & midterm was fairly easy but final was hard. He graded fairly on papers. Disagree w/ others that he only wants his opinion as he admitted when he was wrong in class & will tell u if he doesn't understand. U will work for grade but course is well worth taking. Have Q's go to office hrs or email, it really helped.

Dr. Fott's reputation as an academically demanding professor is spot on! His reputation as an extremely intelligent, helpful, and engaging professor is something I would like to highlight. Fott will make you think, work, and push yourself to earn A's, but you will learn so much in his class. Topnotch professor who could teach ANYWHERE!

Dr. Fott is one of my favorite professors and people at UNLV. I graduated years ago but he remains a great friend and mentor. His class is challenging, but if you attend lectures, complete the readings and put effort into your papers (which should be standard at a college level) it is completely possible to earn an A.

One of the best professors at UNLV, and also one of the most challenging (he is, after all, from Harvard). In the class, titled Individual Society and Freedom we read 6 different texts and focused on a variety of different things. The class format was basically discussing whatever what was read, there was very little lecture.

I agree with the person below me. Professor Fott's class was the best I've ever had at UNLV. While it is imperative to put in a certain amount of effort for class, he makes things easier by posting a list of questions from the reading to focus on. His lectures are very clear and enjoyable, and he is extremely helpful should you have any questions.

I don't know what's wrong with the comments below me. Dr. Fott is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and sweet. His class is NOT HARD, and he has has PhD from Harvard so he's worth taking a class from. He expects you to come to class with your material read and a mind that is willing to learn- not too much to ask. Fott is great, take if you can!

He expects students to not only read everything, but also understand it! You cannot just get by on notes for this class. Don't take him if you're not willing to put in the work, but be warned, Fott really helped prepare me for upper division poli sci classes. Not an easy grade, but a worthy class.
